Does anyone use an on-line backup service like Carbonite in order to backup any of their files? If so, who do you use and are you happy with them?

www.mozy.com
It's an EMC company (I believe) and works well. Free for up to 2GB.. Very reasonable for unlimited.
I use them for my system files, documents, PST's, etc.. Not images.. Works very well.

Okay, I downloaded the Mozy software.
Is there a reason that you said that you don't back up your images there? I was hoping to use it to archive my .NEF and .PSD files. is it because of how long it takes it to do a backup?
Just for grins, I looked at how long it would take to back up my entire 1Tb "My Pictures" folder. They estimate that it will take 5 months. Ugh.

Maybe it's for dial up Wes. You got super duper U-verse now so it should cut that in half at least.
BTW, how are you liking U-verse? I'm guessing you got it installed??

BTW, how are you liking U-verse? I'm guessing you got it installed?? | Actually, the upload estimate was AFTER they had done an analysis of my outbound connection speed (1.4Mbps). I'm LOVING Uverse - except that we are having some issues with the box on our main TV. Sometimes when we turn on the system we get no sound. We have to turn everything off and on a few times for it all to work. This is ONLY true of the box on the main TV. The frustrating part is that I called Uverse from work to see if they could give me some ideas on what to try. They refused to troubleshoot unless I was in front of the box. They didn't even want to listen to the troubleshooting that I had already done. Grrrrrr.......
Okay, back to the on-line backup thing....

Ugh. | I just haven't purchased an account and only use the free one at this point. I have a bunch of NAS storage here at the house (3+ Terabytes) that I use for online backups.. and also copies of everything on DVD/CD that are typically offsite. Also, my partner typically has a copy of most everything RAW as well...
My upload speed is terrible with Time Warner...but a trickle backup isn't such a big deal..

I got Carbonite the first of March It said that it might take a while for the initial back-up. It does the back-up when the computer is idle. At this point it has backed up a little over 37 gigs. I leave my computer on 24/7.

I tried carbonite and the upload time was way longer then I wanted. I think I figured up like a gig a day or something close. If I shoot 8gigs a week and leave my computer on 24/7 it's never gonna finish the "initial upload".
Instead a TB is about a $100. I installed an extra drive and then took a smaller drive and put it in an external enclosure. Mass duplicate on my hard drive and then a smaller, high priority copy on a external drive that I keep unpluged and turned off. This was I have a mass back up in the event of a hard drive failure. I also have a seperate backup of high priority material if I suffer a catastrophic virus that eats both hard drives.

Why don't you backup your images again?

I have 2 TB internal drives to copy. The external drive is only 250gig so it's just for family photos and timeless things. It also gets anything that is current and pending payment. I am in the market for another TB to put into the external. I keep my computer pretty clean so 99% of the time it's going to be a hard disk failure. I have that covered whit the duplicate internal backup. I am considering taking the external and leaving it at a friends or at work so if the house burn down I have it offsite. I am pretty freaky about back up as oyu can see. You can probably guess that I lost a hard disk already. Was doing a video production job. Lost 100+ hours of editing. Grabbed a buddy we both pulled a 48hour straight run to get it done for the drop dead absolute deadline. We got it finished with 30 minutes to spare. Nothing I want to repeat!

I use Carbonite - and I think it's great as a backup in case of computer failure. I also had to switch systems once and once I hooked the new comp I signed into Carbonite and it put all of my backed up files on my new system just the way it would if you had a system crash. The only thing you have to keep in mind is that 30 days after you delete files on your system - Carbonite deletes them on theirs. So, you can't really use it for permanent storage. (I use external hard drives for that.) Still, I shoot at least 8 gigs a week and it has no problem keeping up with the backup. I think it's great and WELL worth the tiny investment to save my behind if my comp crashed today. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
