30 years ago today what ranked as the most devastating tornado in history for the next twenty years (eclipsed by the Oklahoma City tornado) wiped out about 1/5 of Wichita Falls, destroying 2,000+ homes and leaving 42 dead and more than 20,000 homeless.

There is is a 16 minute recording of the weather spotters broadcast that is chilling to say the least.

Man, I can only imagine...10 city blocks wide! Makes a storm shelter worth it's weight in gold. I don't know if it's possible to know how people felt that were actually in the line of distruction without being there. Welcome to tornado alley!

I had a friend in Grad School (denton) whose family lived through it, he left class and told me to tell his other profs that he was going home to help (luckely his family wasn't badily injured) and all his profs said he should take all the time that he needed.

I was talking to people this weekend about that one, also about the one that occured in the 50's that skipped all over Dallas and then the historical one that nailed Waco and the recent one that hit Ft Worth but non compare to Wichita Falls.

I was 18 and working in downtown Wichita Falls when it came through. Remember parts of it like it was yesterday
