Videographers... What's up with that? - 04-14-2009, 08:26 PM

I've been browsing video sites lately and ran across this one some how. I'm going to make a few generalizations be please forgive me in advance for those that this doesn't apply to.

Maybe it's the communities I've been exposed to but it seems photographers are much more interested in building up one another than the video guys. There also seems to be a disdain for photogs. What did we do?

Does anyone shoot video and photography? I know there are a few that used to shoot.

Hopefully the link works.

Those who can't, degrade those who can......

obviously this does not pertain to any videographers here on TPF....

As a former videographer... It is quite the common theme for still photographers to be the brunt of many a negative comment.

Mostly due to experiences with them stepping directly in front of shots and not respecting the video guy that is locked down to a tripod. I gotta say, I had my fill of rude photogs that basically would ignore the fact that I was there to do a job too. It's great to try and edit a first dance with a photographer that ends up being the center of attention circling around the couple with a Fong Dong firing about 100 flashes during a 2min first dance or step right in front of you while the couple has their first kiss.

Anyway... that is just a bit of perspective from the other side.

But it definitely works both ways.

I know this is an old post but I just wanted to bring up that we also have problems of videographers stepping into our shots. In 2 wedding that we have recently done the videographer was in the way constantly. Once the videographer stood on the alter right above the couple so every shot of the ceremony had him in it. The other the guy just kept walking right in front of us all night and it never failed that it was on shots that could not be recaptured. Thinking about it is working me up again !!! ARGGGG !!! LOL.....

I just worked with one (Todd I'm Beaumont) who was
awesome. This is a guy I'd love to work with again. There is another guy here name Todd also that was a pleasure to work with as well.

+1....

When I lived in S. LA. I worked for a video company called Creative Video Services (now Fast Forward Multimedia.) We filmed so many weddings it was UN-REAL, mostly because we were the only live/mobile editing suite in the region. (We had a van with a full editing suite and did editing on location as the event was taking place)

In any event, we worked with the same photographers on a weekly basis, and with it being a small(er) town than say Houston or DFW, it very often was the same guy.

We would always make it a point to get with the photographer before the event and find out where he was setting up, what his plan was etc, and we'd also give him our information as well. It always worked out very nicely.

Course when he did get in the way... it wasn't any big deal to switch to a different camera to get what we needed.

I did video and had great working relationship with the photographers. I guess I knew not to get in their shots and they did the same for me or the best they could. I often told them I knew they only got one shot at some images and I would move around them once they got where they wanted to be. I could fix a lot of things in post. Never had a bad experience quite often we kept each other aware of what was happening next at receptions. Sometimes the photog's got info from the wedding coordinators first.

The still shooters cause a major racket for the audio, at press conferences 8FPS for a few seconds will turn any TV news photographer red.

I'm not a videographer, but people named Todd are just generally awesome to work with.

Never was an audio issue at a wedding, I used two sometimes three wireless units and recorded a feed from the church audio. At the reception normally had a track running under the ambient audio. I even would get a few shots of the photog doing his thing; it was all part of the event.

Weddings are a different game, lavs up on the subjects and its all good. When all your audio is the on-cam shotgun because poduium audio has been through every crap splitter and DA box alive, one shooter two rows up motoring away makes me grimmace.

I like video guys, they bring powerful, warm, tungsten light. I get funny looks when I whip out the LED.

Well since I do both for a living I'll chime in- It just goes back to being respectful and aware of your surroundings. Dont step in front on someone elses shot!! Ive had rude wedding photos step in front of my video and Ive had video guys step in front of my still shots.

That's why I try to "circle around the couple" for about three seconds, then back out of the way. I'll give the videographer a big chunk of song to capture their thing before dipping back in for another quick burst of shots. This, in theory, makes us both happy. The only time I usually have issues with a videographer at a wedding is during the cake cutting, when some of them want to hog all the space...

News shoots are fine, since all the video guys line up in a row and pull sound from a podium mic. We can usually go where we want, as long as we duck down while in front of the video guys.
