Smashed Mirror - 04-22-2009, 10:11 AM

I got an antique mirror in NY last year to hang in the store. It was from the late 1880's with a very ornate frame. I came in this morning and its shattered on the floor.

This is the 2nd extra heavy duty hook that failed. It was supposed to hold up to 200lbs. IT DIDNT. The mirror was about 60lbs. The frame was smashed to bits so I cant even repair it. :( I had a glass table in front of it. Im lucky it missed the table when it fell.

Anyway, thought I'd let you know in case you had heavy stuff hanging on them. I no longer have the packaging to even call the company and tell them they suck.

Oh, that's awful. I know that sick feeling too, our Christmas tree toppled over while we were out of town last year and we lost countless very nice ornaments we had collected over the years in our travels - most of which are simply not replaceable and it sounds like this mirror isn't either. Is the frame damaged as well? Thank goodness no one was walking under the mirror as it fell. Sounds like the hooks may not have been properly anchored?

Wow that sucks, sorry to hear that.
So it just broke? I've seen them pull out of the wall before, but never just brake. Scary.

I had some glass shelves in my bedroom when I was in high school. I woke up one morning to find that one of the shelves had simply shattered for no apparenty reason. Thankfully, mine was easy to replace.

I can't imagine what it must be like to lose something like your mirror.

That sucks

My uncle is an interior designer and has a large mirror in his home that must weigh 150 lbs or better. He payed a carpenter to hang it. Took 3 people, but it was done right.

The anchor hook disappeared. I havent found it yet. Strike that - Mike hasnt found it yet. He is picking up the rubble. I had the head snap off of one of these the 1st time I tried to hang the mirror.

The mirror slid down the wall, and shattered when it hit the floor. The bottom of the frame was made out of plaster and wood. It shattered on impact along with the mirror. I usually hold onto stuff if I think it can be mended or turned into something else. This is beyond dead. :o(

Here it is...was.

But you now have a broken mirror to use! Take the broken pieces, glue on a board and reflect onto your background! Who on this forum showed a photo like that?

Yah it sucks that it broke the frame. Were you using only ONE hook?

Depends on how old it is and the condition it is in. Ornate frames like that are pricey new, never mind antiques. This one originated in the Hamptons. One family had it since it was made, so there were stories with it.

The frame was too bashed to use for photos. It was a total junker.

It was pretty. Texxter had a reflector he had from some mirror shards of glass. It was in a post yesterday about studio invaders (I think in the people section). Maybe you could use some of it for that.

For heavy mirrors and large heavy frames of any kind I use two strips of J channel. One goes on the wall screwed to the studs and facing up and the other goes on the frame facing down. Also real easy to align and it never needs to be straightened.

Sorry about yours.
