THE bold, bright colours, sweeping brush strokes and stippled detail look worthy of any work in watercolour.
But these new "paintings" by David Hockney are in fact created entirely using Photoshop.

"The computer is a terrific medium,” he says. “You miss some things -- you miss texture for example -- but you gain a lot. I realised how good it would be for portraits because of the freedom you have to alter things. In a watercolour, once you put things down, that’s it."

Maybe it's just me... I don't paint... but are these types of watercolours images good? I'm kind of a low class kind of girl... and there are things that I just don't appreciate like some folks do...

I think it's cool that he's doing it... but I've seen some BEAUTIFUL works of art from some of the photoshop paintings... I think they might 'start' with a photo though... so maybe that'sthe difference. I guess he's freehanding it all.

Water color is one of the most difficult mediums to master.

Hockney is one of the greatest living artist and has worked in many media.

See his web site and see if you can get his books at your local library 'David Hockney by David Hockney' and 'That's the Way I See It.'

He also a well know photographer. See his Cameraworks.

One of my favorite Hockney watercolors.

Many artists use a photograph to start with. You will prepare your composition, (nude body, still life, landscape etc) In school, you almost had to take a photo to make sure that the lighting, or you composition did not change while you are finishing your art piece. Sometimes I could only get a model for one day. I cannot paint or sculp a piece in one day.

To use photoshop as my paint brush (assuming I could figure out how) to paint and object would be no different in my mind that a paintbrush. It is just another artist tool. While there may be some advantages to using a photoshop paintbrush, I think the challenges may be greater that an actual brush. But that is where my skill set is (not in photoshop). Each artist is going to be different. I don't see that the medium (assuming the artist has skill with the medium) that I use should make my work have any less value.

But to me to take a photo and change it in photoshop, is a different type of art. It may or may not have value based upon the artists skills.

Don't really care for his stuff (photoshop watercolor types), but if he can sell that and live off the proceeds, more power to him.
I frankly think alot of the photoshop artists on DeviantArt and the like are much more talented.

I hardly think Hockney needs to worry about living off the proceeds of that work. His early work brings 7-10 million dollars a canvas.
