Ugh, Swine Flu in Cancun - 04-26-2009, 07:29 AM

So, I'm heading for the Mayan Riviera to shoot a wedding in the morning, and they just confirmed that the 8 cases in NY came from the Cancun area. This sucks, but I guess I can get some pj coverage in while I'm there.

Just make sure that's all you get. As we always tell you on your adventures, be careful and come back safe. I hear medical masks are the new fashion item. Make sure you get yours!!

Haha, well, it wouldn't be the first time I've had to wear one lol! I will have to check with my favorite store to see if they have any with rhinestones or come in other colors. Although, the blue ones might bring out my eyes. Personally, I think this flu sounds scarier than men with guns lol.

Read this just on CNN - But in New Zealand, officials said 22 students and three teachers back from a three-week-long language trip to Mexico may have been infected with the swine flu virus.

The 25 students and teachers at Auckland's Rangitoto College returned to New Zealand via Los Angeles on Saturday.

Fourteen have shown flu-like symptoms, with four "more unwell than others," said Dr. Julia Peters, clinical director of Auckland Regional Public Health Service. It is not clear whether anyone else who was on the plane with them has shown signs of the disease.

Well, my bf will be happy that I'm not allowed to kiss anyone else while there...lol! They just confirmed the cases in NY are swine flu. Haven't heard yet from my bride that arrived in Mexico yesterday, but unless she brings it up, I will keep my mouth shut about it. No need to stress her out.

This is starting to look very serious.

Swine Flu Emergency Caused By New Variant of Old Bug

"The virus has already evaded the first line of defense that health officials had hoped to use against a pandemic. International flu experts preparing for a pandemic had planned to contain the initial outbreak of a new, lethal strain of flu. The swine flu virus has already spread so far in Mexico and the U.S. that the containment strategy is out of the question, said Anne Schuchat, interim deputy director for science and public health programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Atlanta-based U.S. agency.

“We don’t think we can contain the spread of this virus,” she said yesterday in a conference call with reporters. "

SARS outbreak happened about 6 years ago, almost the exact time of year (April/May).

Well, I just hope they don't close the borders to and from Mexico. Of course, I guess there are worse places to be stranded, but I don't think my bride will cover me staying there until they open them again. It wouldn't be the first time I've been stuck in a country when they closed the airport. I also don't think my brides back home will appreciate me being on an extended vacation lol. Ooh, but on a good note, maybe my flight won't be crowded headed down there, and I will get a seat to myself.

They just shut all the schools here for a week. Now scrambling to find child care for a week. THIS STINKS!

U.S. Declares Public Health Emergency Over Swine Flu

Looks like it's going to start getting harder to get back to the U.S. from Mexico.

get your flu shots if you havent.

As part of the emergency, the Department of Homeland Security is releasing 25% of stockpiled antivirals -- Tamiflu and Relenza -- to the states.

Yeah, I read on one blog (not sure the reliability) that they are quarantining the Cancun airport and it's going to start getting hard to get in and out of the country. So, I guess I will find out tomorrow. I tried to get Tamiflu from a doctor in McKinney, but apparently I would have to go to North Dallas and even then it's not a for sure that they would give it to me.

I may have lucked out. I had one of the original 1976 Swine flu shots and it may provide increased protection.
