Question Help! - 04-29-2009, 11:15 AM

I am new to Texas Photo Forum. First off my name is D'Lana I have my own photography business "Open Sky Photography" I am used to doing mostly out door portraits but have accepted a job to do prom picture next Saturday May 9. I do not own studio equipment and if I did there would not be enough oom for me to set up. I am thinking of doing a backdrop and maybe a few props.

Here are my questions: (ANY ADVICE WILL HELP)
1) Where can I find a sturdy inexpensive background mount?
2) The theme is the "Roaring Twenties", any ideas on props and or backdrops?

Anything will help THANKS!!!

Welcome to the forum. MAy I ask a question? Why would you take a job, knowing you dont have the equipment? And not have a source for it? Try B&H photos.

I'm assuming when you say you don't own studiio equipment, you are talking backdrops, etc., not that you have no lights. Cause 'no lights' + 'prom photos' = business killer.

Fabric is the easiest 'backdrop' ....lots of options.... A stand can be from BH for like $120.... Don't skimp on that for safety reasons. Southern engineering has it's place, a school event isn't the place.

Oops - roaring 20's was the jazz age... So a curtain style background done right would work really well.

I have been informed by the prom commitee that there is not enough space for me to really set up so thanks for the advice and I think I am just goin to have to wing it.

There is always space somewhere. It might even be outside. Go early and figure it out NOW, not the night of the prom.

1920s style - sounds like fun! If I were getting paid to do this gig I'd make sure I got some of the following:

- Feathers, like peacock feathers
- Head bands, black ones, with some pearls or rhinestones on them
- Long strings of pearls
- It would cool to get a 20's style hat

Just do your research on what fashion was like in the 20s and bring some accessories. It was a very exciting time.

Concerning the venue, backdrop and lights, trying to wing it seems like a recipe for failure, especially if lighting is required and all you've got is a portable flash on your camera. You don't provide any information on what you've got, so it's hard to know what to tell you.
