CHL Classes? - 04-30-2009, 03:58 PM

I want to renew my wife's CHL for mother's day. Can anyone recomend a good place around Houston. We live near 288/610 but the classes can be anywhere in Houston. Has anyone ever attended a women only class?
Thanks in advance.

Check out http://www.topgunrange.com/
Great guys there. They are located in the Galleria Area.

Lots of places around town. Top Gun, near the Galleria, charges $148. Memorial, Witte Rd, north of I-10 charged $135 the last time I taught for them. You can also contact Marc Johnson at http://www.tchl.us...Marc has classes most weekends at various locations around town.

I've taught classes for all these folks. In all cases, the class fee covers notary, fingerprints, photos, and range fees. All you need to do is bring a handgun (.32cal or larger) and 50 rounds of proper ammo. Most ranges and instructors will allow you to rent a gun if you don't have one.

You'll send a seperate check to the state with your application. The standard application fee is $140 but that fee may be reduced or even waived under certain circumstances. The license is good for 4-years the first time around. After that, renewed licenses are good for five years. Your fourth and later renewals only require that you go through retraining/proficiency demonstrations once every ten years. I think that's a bad idea for all the folks who don't/won't train and think their gun is a lucky rabbit's foot.

I actually completed a CHL class in Dallas yesterday. There was only one place in town that I found that did the class during the week, and in one day.
There are several that break it up over three weekday eves.

Costs up here run around $110-125.

My understanding is that it is taking 90 days to process.... sent mine in today ( I am old, so I get a discount also )

I took my class with www.onedaychl.com. The class was fine. It's hard not to pass.

However, being a female, I must say that I think I would have benefitted from a women only class due to the fact that they generally discuss more info pertaining to carrying, situational awareness, etc regarding women.

I think that someone who has experience with a gun and has had training, is much more trustworthy with one than someone who hasn't had experience or training. Everybody can pick up a handgun and shoot you with it. We've all learned how to make one work by watching TV.
If you understand and respect the power you have, you are less likely to abuse it.

I took mine from Greg at http://www.onedaychl.com as well. Great instructor.

Also check out http://www.chl-shooting-range.com/index.html. I believe they have 'women only' courses.

One of the actual lawyer authors of the CHL bill runs this site here: http://www.texaschlforum.com/ and teaches a chl course at PSC here: http://www.psc-range.com/

I live in Austin and I have made it a point to take a couple of the courses that he teaches. They are worth the drive.

lol.....no. I just wanted to get her something different this year.
I think I'll give her the reservation letter in a holster full of roses or something along those lines.
