It might sound weird, but for most drug testing, the initial phase is almost always done on a small group of healthy people. The second trial is larger and is mostly all people that actually have the disease/disorder that the drug is targeting.

That first phase will indicate side effects that might make the drug a "no-go" and it will help to establish safe dosage and route of dosage by using different routes and then doing blood and urine samples to see where it is going, how fast, how it is eliminated from the body, etc.

It's the same for animal testing. I used to prepare dose concentrations for some animal studies and we always started with healthy critters.

I've taken drugs for a lot less then 2k before....

I personally prefer to go out and earn $2k rather than put some experimental who knows what in my body. But that's just me.

Wonder if your insurance co. will cover your hospital bill if something goes wrong...
