Reason to take your camera everywhere ... The STORY
I typically take my dogs to the park everyday for a bit of exercise. I usually bring my camera and work on improving my skills. Well ... today, I was pretty tired so I decided to take the dogs for a very short walk. I get to the park and the first thing I see is a HAWK catching its dinner. My first thought is to grab the thing around my neck .. D'OH ... I left my camera at home. Well ... I figured that the hawk wouldn't stick around as I approached .... so I got closer and closer .... I was probably 15 feet or so away ... me staring at him ... he staring back at me. I continued the walk (another 20 minutes or so) and could not stand it anymore. I got back to the car, took the dogs home, grabbed my camera and returned. Good news, the hawk is still hanging out ... I approach him and this time he gets startled by some kids playing basball ... he flies away and I got this shot as he left ....
Moral of the story ... take your camera everywhere .... you never know

Yup, I have a Canon S40 (point n shoot) that's permanent home is in my purse. I don't always carry my 10D with me, so the S40 has come in handy many, many times...for both me *and* my friends! "Hey Sarah, quick, lemme borrow your camera!" :)

I've been meaning for some weeks now to ask you what your Avatar is. Is it the UofH Cougar? I'm startled every time I see one of your posts by this fierce, raw image which I'll bet is discordant with who YOU are -- especially as a photographer.
Just an observation.

| It's actually a photo of one of the panther statues (I believe there are 8 of them) outside Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC, where the Carolina Panthers play. I grew up in Charlotte and my parents still live there. I shot the photo at Christmas time this past year when I was home for the holidays. I like how they put wreaths around the necks of the panthers -- something about the contrast between the teeth and the nice holiday spirit. It makes me laugh.
No, I don't consider myself a "GRRR!" type of person. I'm actually very nice. :D When I chose it for my Avatar image, I was just looking for a photo I liked, and it was one of my most recent images.

I agree, we should and I'm glad you got at least one good shot of the Hawk, but my question is....
Which camera? I carry two in my bag and always keep my bag in the trunk but I'm curious as to which piece of gear is your favorite? (this should probably be a separate forum question)

I carry some type of camera everywhere I go. Its impractical to carry my DSLR/SLR everyday, I commute daily to work on my motorcycle and I'm limited to what I can carry, weight is a consideration too. I have a seperate backpack to carry my laptop/lunch and assorted items for work. There's no room for a standard size camera/lens/stuff of any size. I have a seperate backpack specifically for camera gear and tripod.
I have a Casio EX-S600 6.3 MP compact camera, it as a 2.5" LCD display on the back and is very handy. I found a cell phone case that the camera fits nicely in and I wear on my belt...most people think its a phone until I show them.
If I'm specifically going to an event, festival, etc., then I take my car and all the camera gear I need.

Serious photojournalists carry their professional cameras everywhere they go - everywhere. I have photjo friends that you'd never see without a Nikon or Canon slung around their neck or shoulder no matter the time of day or night, no matter the weather. If it rained the camera would go under the coat or get a plastic bag stuck over it. These guys were the giants of pj - many of them are still doing it. Today they've switched to digital SLRs but they're still toting the heavy gear everywhere they go.

Afragola | Yep, as I try to get back in harness, I've got a 5D on my desk and bailout bag with 3 lenses and flash on the floor by it. It the mindset this engenders about having it to take the shoot and not think, "That would be interesting."

Like others, I try to keep atleast one of my Canon's with me...
A small group of these guys would roost in a tallow tree next to the street. Got lucky and was able to get several shots one morning. (which happened to be the last time I saw them in the tree) | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
