To Trek. Or...Not to Trek. - 05-10-2009, 02:09 AM

As a child I can remember watching Star Trek in front of a B&W TV. This was 1966 of corse. From what I have seen and read this new movie is an abomanation from a purests point of view. I have however put my bias aside and pruchased a ticket for Sunday evening at the studio movie grill.

At least I can have a beer while I watch my childhood rapped and pillaged.

Carry on.

It does not follow the old stories. I too am someone who grew up watching Trek with my mother and there are many many changes to this storyline. However, much like many other movies that have been coming out lately this is more of a reboot of the franchise, or a reimagining if you will, than another story to be told.

However this movie was great, I loved it. Many nods to the original series with things that were said and jokes that were made etc. If you don't get see it you will be sorely disappointed in yourself.

As a die hard Trek fan I was also a little worried. What I found was first an excellent action flick, and second they did an amazing job with explaining WHY things were different. If you like Trek, and go in with an open mind, you should have no problems. I was ready to rip it apart from the start, boy was I surprised!

It is typical Star Trek... magnified. As you probably already know, there is a time travel element... and because of that, everything we know has been "reset" so to speak... and in a BIG way. I'm anxious to see where they go with it from here, honestly.

This from an all but rabid fan of Star Trek .. I have often commented that even a bad repeat Star Trek episode is better than most things on TV .. I loved Deep Space Nine, was entertained by Voyager and Enterprise, and even will watch Star Trek V just for a laugh once in a while.

This was not the best Star Trek movie ever.. that title still belongs to Wrath of Khan .. but I think it makes the top five... up there with Undiscovered Country, First Contact, and saving the whales.

Just go. Boldly. And forget your Trek history ... look at it as a pure relaunch and you'll be happy.

I would have to admit....my wife thought she was going to fall asleep thru the movie...took her to the Thursday 9pm showing...She stayed awake and liked the movie...

I personally liked the way they handled this....it is a great way to reset and move on...I think the characters...did justice to the old but also added a newness to them...that will bring in new fans...

Right now I will have to say I think this is going to be one of the best movies of 2009, but we still have transformers and GI-JOE..!!! (on the action sci-fi side)

And maybe just maybe this movie might jump-start, the whole Star Trek franchise again...after Enterprise....I think it needed this....

We saw it and thought it was pretty good. We will probably get the DVD when it is released to add to the other 10.

I thought everyone knew that

My son, an avid Star Trek fan (comes by it natural), said it was an awesome movie.

as soon as I can find a babysitter, and my wife has some time off, we are off to see it too.

I went to the late show last night and was blown away by it. There are some things in the movie that I am dying to discuss with friends but none of them have seen it yet. This movie is one that even discussing the main story would spoil it for someone.

One question I have for those who have seen it about a minor point that really has no significance outside of the scene it refers to. Am I right in remembering that during Kirk's Kobayashi Maru test the Klingon ships used cloaking devices? If so, somebody goofed. I know the story involves time travel but the impact of it shouldn't have pushed things forward enough for the Romulans to have developed it and have already given it to the Klingons. No one on Earth should have even been aware of the cloaking devices yet.

Anything that made William Shatner a star should not be held up as golden. I hope to see the new Trek film with no bias toward the dated old TV show and uber cheesey movies. Sure, they broke ground back in the day. Time to move on!

I love Star Trek however, not as much as my husband who collected ALL of the figures and ships and such. We went to see it for Mother's Day and we both loved it. Very good "reboot" as some of you have put it and it does explain why its different from the original Star Trek. I want to go see it again. :)
