Star Trek SPOILER THREAD - 05-10-2009, 09:16 PM

Ok.. do not read further if you don't want to be spoiled. This thread is being started to discuss details and nitpicks of the new Star Trek Movie.

Read on and be spoiled.. you have been warned.

Ok.. Two nitpicks.. one brought up in the other thread... If you're not a major Trekkie, you may roll your eyes at this... LOL

The original reset occurs when Nemo comes back in time and attacks George Kirk's vessel the USS Kelvin. If I am remembering my Trek right, this should be 20 or so years after the Federation/Romulan war spoken of in Balance of Terror (TOS).

That same episdoe (Balance of Terror), the crew of the Enterprise become the first "outsiders" to see the face of Romulans and realize they look just like Vulcans (a side note: Mark Lenard, who also played Spock's father Sarek played the Romulan commander in that episode).. and that Romulans and Vulcans were originally the same species.

A later episode (The Enterprise Incident, maybe?) the Romulans are using Klingon D-7 Cruisers.. and it is explained that the Romulans and Klingons traded ship designs for cloaking technology. (The real world story is they had a Romulan episode calling for multiple Romulan ships, but didn't have the budget to build more models - so they used Klingon ship models instead.)

Ok.. now the two nitpicks...

In the Kobyashi Maru simulation, the Klingons "decloak" ... duh, they shouldn't have that tech for another 10 years... yea, I suppose the reset could have pushed technology a little.

Several times through the movie, it is mentioned that Romulans and Vulcans are nearly identical... but they shouldn't know that yet.

Yes.. nitpicks.. but nitpicking is a tradition with Trekkies. LOL

I too am a die hard Trek fan, so I started to nitpick then I realized something. A large powerful ship coming in and devastating tons of my ships would tend to have me switch massive amounts of funds and research from other aspects into technology and weaponry. This would naturally mean that in the same period of time the new timeline would have advanced tremendously in tech and weapons while leaving a glut somewhere else, perhaps medicine or colonization.

In addition, if you remember your Star Trek "Enterprise" show, the Vulcans were very reluctant to share tech with the humans, a huge powerful ship endangering both races could have helped them be a little less reluctant.

Ya.. I suppose.. like I said, minor nitpicks. Overall, I enjoyed it... making my top 5 Star Trek films easily.. haven't decided if it makes the top 3 yet.

these are your nitpicks?

how about Uhura and Spock as lovers?
how about Checkov being part of the original crew of the Enterprise (remember he doesn't actually join the Enterprise until season 2)
Kirk serving Pike?
Spock an instructor at Star Fleet?
c'mon, if you're going to nitpick at least nitpick stuff that matters;)

I couldn't be bother to nitpick this film because I was enjoying it too much. For a reboot this was great. I loved some of the great stuff they threw in from the old school show and even movies. Old Spock makes some references to time travel making fun of Kirk, comments about Scotty not having discovered the teleporting thing yet (this isn't the first time they've given technology to an earlier time period). Kirk sleeping with the green alien.

The movie was great, and I look forward to seeing what they do with it.

Right...we thought the movie rocked BUT...the biggest nitpick...this movie buts up right up to the original series...however in the movie Amanda Grayson (Spocks Mom) dies (or assumably dies while transporting to the Enterprise).....however in the series she is alive.

in the original series, Vulcan also still exists ;).

I could at least buy that continuity error because Vulcan is destroyed so some things might change.

Time Travel always introduces continuity errors into a movie series, and this one is no different.

The only good thing that comes out of this time travel is that it offers up new stories to be told.

I also don't remember the original series having shuttles and a shuttle bay, yet the Kelvin had one, and even the Enterprise had one.

The Enterprise did have shuttles in the original series. I'm not sure how many episodes showed them but I believe the first was The Galileo Seven, which was in the first season. They also used them in The Doomsday Machine and in Metamorphosis. None of the shuttles shown there were anywhere near the size of the ones in this movie.

hello. well i didn't watch much of the original series but i did read reviews on what critics thought of the new movie, and they explained that the reason they are able to mess around w/ the facts/story lines is the fact they are in an alternate reality (which i believe they did explain briefly in the movie?) not really meant to exactly follow the original series.

I think you missed a major point of the movie... because of Nero altering space/time, this is an alternate reality. Of course it's different.

Any new movies they make will be in a completely different timeline, and have nothing to do with most of the stuff in the original series.

I thought it was hilarious when Spock and Uhura are kissing good bye and Kirk looks over with a "Heeeeeey...something's not quite right here...and HEEEEEEY!!" Funny!

Overall I thought the actors did a brilliant job playing off each other and they really brought in a lot of the old chemistry we're use to seeing from the old guys (and good amount of cheese, but not too much like Shatner usually brings). Usually I hate time travel/alternate timelines, but I think they did it well. I loved it and I'll be going again.

Uh, I guess I did... you were nitpicking stuff that was there because of the alternate timeline? Unless you were being sarcastic, in which case my Internet Sarcasm Meter is currently in the shop
