"For a distinguished example of breaking news photography in black and white or color, which may consist of a photograph or photographs, a sequence or an album, in print or online or both, Ten thousand dollars ($10,000).

Awarded to Patrick Farrell of The Miami Herald for his provocative, impeccably composed images of despair after Hurricane Ike and other lethal storms caused a humanitarian disaster in Haiti.

amazing pics.... I think it's great that he is awarded 10k, I would love to see the same amount given to the people of Haiti... The more I think of this the more I wonder. Would I be able to accept that money?? That would tear me up inside. Profiting from the hard ship of others.... but I digress. Truly amazing pictures.....

You could look at it like this way... After seeing what he did and experiencing what he did (I'm sure Leslie can agree) I wouldn't say he is profiting from it. BUT if you do consider it profiting, then he is being paid because he captured and told the story of those who couldn't tell it themselves.

yes he was paid, by the newspaper that he works for. He was down there on assignment.....

He did/does incredible work, and I am sure he(his work) is responsible for a lot of the donations(money, clothes, food) that went there in the aftermath. I'm not sure where I am going with this, those thoughts just entered my mind and I happened to write what I felt. I'm not sure I could do his job. I don't think there is any way that I could be taking pictures instead of helping people. Yet his pictures were responsible for a lot of help that arrived afterward. Maybe I should just LOL.

The people that suffered during the floods and atrocities in Haiti wanted you to take their pictures and get their story out there. I had women begging me to photograph what had happened to them. It's because of images like this that people connect to a country and people they normally wouldn't even think twice about. As a photojournalist, even on assignment, you get very little money, and yet you risk your life to tell these stories. I was there shooting during the flood, and I was almost killed during that time. Because so many people were helping the victims of the flood, violence broke out in PAP. Also, we were at high risk of staph infections (2 reporters I know got staff infections). I had to walk in filthy water with bodies in it to help tell these stories. So, believe me, the story is the most important thing to the photojournalists, not the money. It's images like these that can really make an impact on people and open up peoples' hearts.

The OP mentioned that anyone interested in PJ work should look at this work. He is right, of course - this is brilliant PJ work.

Notice the format, though. Web-based audio slide shows and/or multimedia are skills that need to be mastered now. You must know audio as well as shooting good photos. You must know how to construct a good slide show, most of which use natural sound as opposed to the narration on this show.

Thanx for the post - good stuff.

Wasn't able to listen to the sound (at work) but those images just break my heart. I don't think I could ever do that job, and stay disconnected.
