The best $800 I spent today - 05-13-2009, 06:07 PM

We just got back from vacation and found that our beloved dog, who is almost 15, had an egg-sized hard mass in his groin. It felt like nothing we've ever seen on him and my husband took him in to the vet this morning, who very tersely said, "that needs to come out immediately" and offered zero speculation on what it might be, which we both took as a very bad sign. This afternoon, I'm happy to say that the vet is feeling much better about it. While he does not have the path report back, he said it was completely inconsistent with a malignant tumor in several respects and is 99% sure that a full recovery is in order. I know how many dog lovers are on here and I know you'll all agree that getting news like that meant I didn't even blink when I got that $800 bill for the surgery. A few days of laying low and he should be back to his old semi-cranky, but loveable mutt self. Whew..........I'm counting my blessings today.

I had an old childhood friend (a Chesapeake Bay Retriever) die of cancer some time ago. I agree - that was money very well spent.

Daniel, I still think of my sister's old Golden, who had cancer - and we all miss her a lot as well. But, these well-loved critters are never gone from our memories.

Glad to hear the good news. I lost one of my Goldens to cancer three years ago. I still miss her. I got another Golden but Maya is still missed.

Let us know the final eval when the labs come back.
Sounds like a nice dog, and worth every penny.

Will do Tom. I felt so bad for him last night - he could not get comfortable and wanted in and out all night long. My husband just admitted he finally left the back door wide open so he could try to get a little sleep.

He is a good dog. Aren't they all, though? I'm so glad we lucked into him as a shelter rescue in 1995.

sounds like it was well spent.
By the time my childhood dog was showing signs of being sick she was unfortunately too far gone. I got her at 5 and she passed just shy of my 18th bday while I was in California visiting my now dh. :(. I still believe she waited for me not to be there. Miss her tons. She had breast cancer.
The one we have now is great too but she isn't "peewee" lol
I would have spent it in a heart beat too.

Take care of your pup!

Not all dogs are good ones, but the special ones are sometimes better than decent people.
