Brad, I disagree with you on this. A shoot through umbrella can be placed much closer to the subject because you don't have to deal with the umbrella shaft. See one of the Strobist articles HERE

I can see that being the case most of the time... but my experimentation showed for this setup, bouncing was slightly better on the shadow edges.. I don't know if that because of the flash I'm using or if because the umbrella I'm using doesn't shoot through well... it could be either. LOL

Well, the books on her head worked.. she is still short. But apparently it made things pop out in other places.

I love both the phots!!! Also im very inspired by the set up and would like some more details like where did you buy the umbrella and softbox? At least a brand name or model number please! Also where did you get the backdrop?

Shepherd Photography added 1 Minutes and 30 Seconds later...Double Post Merged Below

Umbrella is a Photogenic Eclipse .. has a black backing that can be removed to make it shoot through. 36 inch, I think.. ran about $30 and purchased from Midwest Photo Exchange (mpex.com)

I've replaced the softbox (which was a leftover piece from another set and no longer available) with a Brolly Box from Alien Bees.. also runs about $30. (alienbees.com)

Gels can be found at camera stores.. for the Vivitar flashes, I bought 12 inch squares and cut them myself.. Got that from Arlington Camera (arlingtoncamera.com and a sponsor of TPF) ... for the ancient Vivitar flash I used as a background here, it came with several plastic inserts that work as gels.

The background is an old canvas background that someone else who uses the studio keeps there.. I think I use it more than he does.. have NO idea where he got it. LOL

Also how did you hook them up to the camera? Pocket wizard? Synch cords?

There is a third flash behind the model, pointed at the background, that has an amber gel.

These are triggered via radio microsyncs on the two lights.. and an optical slave on the third.
