Need an answer, please. - 09-26-2009, 06:43 PM

I have a Senior portrait session scheduled for tomorrow and the mother was asking about taking pictures on railroad tracks. I have heard that this is illegal, is this true? I remember reading something about several months ago but can't seem to remember where.

Can someone answer this, please.

Thanks,
Troy

It's illegal.

It is trespassing just like if you park tomorrow in a retail parking lot and walk to a photo location without entering a store.

Whatever you do, don't post them here!

If you do it, more than likely nothing will happen. Then you can feel like you got away with something..

And if you do get caught, Corn, Ronnie, Lonnie, and Mario will help pay the fine as they are now accessories before the fact.

I did it once and a cop waved as he drove by, but then some big ugly dude on a motor cycle came and yelled at us and threatened to sue us or something because he worked for the railroad. We didnt give a problem and left. Got most of the shots we wanted anyways. The guy was super rude.

People always talk about the legalities of shooting on railroad tracks (rightly so) but forget that in many cases it is extremely unsafe. Trains are big, loud and fast. But it's amazing at how sneaky they can be. There's a stretch of track near me where the town pushed to establish a "quiet zone" where the horn can't be sounded at crossings. That's what I call stupid. The tracks have been there since the mid-1800s and were no surprise when people bought their homes.

In light of all this illegal activity going on in our photography world (geesh!) I'm thinking of getting a R.R. track prop that I can rent out since it is such a desired and sought out background. Yea I'm seeing a business opportunity here. I can already see the $$$ rolling in!
