7th Grade Choir... - 05-03-2010, 09:29 PM

So my good friend Cat asked me to help out her daughter's 7th grade choir with a group shot this evening. Bit of a last second thing, and extremely rushed I might add. I don't know what the story was, but its another one of those "OMG NINO we need a group shot done right now cuz [we forgot][we hated the one we got before][we need it for this weekend]" things.

So off to the school I went to wrangle thirty 12-year-olds. I was given a hallway and a cafeteria to work with.

They were a rowdy bunch, and they seemed to laugh more or less every 3 seconds. Rather than reel in all that giddiness to try to do a more traditional shot, we had the choir director instruct them to go thru the motions of their full performance (which includes some theatrical type antics) all at the same time.

My result was thus:

Much better than a "traditional" pose. They look like they're having fun. Nice work.

Thanks. Yeah I didn't see any success coming from trying to make them pose "properly", so I didn't bother, and I am glad the director agreed. These kids weren't wild, you know, they were just excited 12 year olds. Can't contain that even if you wanted to!

That does look like a fun photo. I was looking through it and you can see the different characters everyone is portraying. As if there is a story with in a story here.

Nice. What did you use to light this quick set up?

Two bare bulb AB400's at full power. I was told we'd be shooting "most likely outdoors" at about 6:00pm, which I thought would be great, but I brought two of my 400's anyway just to have something if needed.

In the end, they were woefully underpowered for the scenario. But I wasn't told we were shooting indoors until I arrived, nor was I told we'd be in a large cafeteria stage until I arrived. Luckily I could still get 100 at 5.0, and the 17mm length afforded me the DOF I needed.
