Talking I guess the D3 is an OK Portrait Camera - 05-24-2010, 10:21 PM

I've almost forgotten just how handy the D3 is to have around...

When shooting Sara Mae, I noticed we had some excellent window light coming in but when I metered it, there was no way the PhaseOne P45 was going to get the shot. The native ISO is 50 and I wouldn't shoot it above 200 unless there was no other option. I'm lucky enough to have just such an option in my second gear bag

Nikon D3, Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR
ISO 400, f/5, 1/60 @ 120mm

Of course you can see a lot more of Sara Mae in the Human Form section...

Comments and critiques appreciated as always.

I always love your work Scott.

No full size for pixel peepers this time? I guess the D3 is only ok for portraits :)

Did you use a tripod when taking this or are you just that steady at 1/60th?

Comparing this to the PhaseOne provides some interesting anylsis.

Thanks for posting!

I get that all the time... Usually with 'looking' in the middle though!

If you must, but don't expect what you see from the PhaseOne... Link

I actually had to fire up CaptureNX to check on this one because I know I shot some of these natural light shots hand held with VR on, but on this one I must have used the tripod because VR was off. I have two spots in the new studio that have wonderful light. This was shot on the north wall where I have two large windows with fill coming from the east french doors. I used my 4x6 panel reflector with the white surface to even it out a bit.

Thanks to all for the comments!

I can't find anything flawed, so I must simply say once again...OUTSTANDING work.

Since I see no reason to critique, I can only comment. Very attractive young model, excellent use of natural lighting. Very much a style I would like to emulate. Nuff said.

Sure you didn't mean D3x?

Thanks. She is so easy to work with. I'm so happy she likes my work...

Thanks. I really need to get out of the studio and learn how to use natural light. It's hard for me because I'm used to having so much control over the lights and other elements in the frame.
