+1 to that.
The only way to shoot with strobes is with Manual....really the only way to shoot ANYTHING is in manual.
But I digress.
I know I have been able to get excellent exposure with a single strobe/flashgun and when im shooting flash I rarely go over iso 400, so I dont need to worry about noise.
If you flash is powerful enough, you should be able to shoot at at least 1/60 f5.6 ISO 100.
Here is one I shot with my Camera on Full manual.
I used two Alienbee strobes, my camera was in full manual, 1/160 F8 ISO 100. On a black background, very similar to what your trying to do.
Here is another one I took of myself a couple of years back, I used 1 flashgun on full power. Im not sure what my settings were, but im sure it was around 1/160 and ISO100. I know it was manual too because I cant afford TTL flashes.
I know these arent perfect, but it can be done. You just have to learn how to light, it has nothing to do with the camera.
