Interesting concept. The exposure might have been tough because of all the white. Were you using manual exposure? DSLR's have a tendency to underexpose when the see a bunch of white.

From EXIF, Looks like Av was used and it will tend to Underexpose when white is against black. I call insufficient lighting on these. With shutter speeds of 1/10 and 1/4, It has to be a lighting issue, and with apertures of 5.6-8 and ISO's at 100, it's understandable why.
What were you using for light?
These could have been great, fun pics. They are all underexposed however, and people's hair and the dog get lost in the BG.

I agree with Sam, a little more main light and some rim light would really help these out.

Is there a way to set your own WB?? Sometimes that helps.
Also, what was your ISO set at? That could have also added some light in here if you were at your max Aperture and a Shutter speed that was comfortable enough to not be blurry.

WB looks fine to me (well, close enough). Underexposure and sharpness are the only issues with these.

You might try to set a white point and black point in PS. That would stretch the range of these images. It's not a remedy for proper lighting, but can be a saving post process, and its fairly simple to try.

The framing on all except the first one are not that great. They are way under exposed, and they arent sharp either.
If you are using strobes, balance out your exposure. Start with your strobe at 1/2 power, 1/60 shutter speed and f5.6/
Adjust your aperature as needed.
Try to get the exposure as right as possible IN camera, that way you dont have to worry about it later in photoshop when you doing your touching up.

Nah, it's no biggie. We were all there at one time.
When using strobes it's best to shoot manual, many times the camera will try to over compensate by taking the lower ambient light into account.
I'm not sure what the ambient light looked like here, but assuming you weren't using it at all, these could have been shot at 1/80-1/125, f.5-5.6, ISO 800. I could be wrong, but I'd give that a go and see what it looks like.
If you have more powerful lights you could shoot 1/125, f.8, ISO 100-200.
Were you asking how to actually change the settings on your camera or what you should be shooting at?

Nah, you can shoot really good pics with the XT. With those bodies, it is a little more difficult to change settings than, say, on a 40D.
You have to turn the wheel to the "M" on the dial, then the top wheel roller changes the shutter speed, and to change the aperture, you press the +/- button on the back and roll the same roller wheel that is used for the shutter. ISO is changed by pressing up on the back 4-button selector area, and moving over to the desired ISO then pressing the center button of the 4-button selector area.
A .PDF Manual for the XT can be found HERE.

Eric,
I doubt you need a new camera.
It's the setting of a camera's aperture, shutter speed, and ISO all combine to make an "exposure." It's the proper balance of those three elements that make a correct exposure. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
