1st attempt at OCF - CC? - 10-03-2010, 04:05 PM

One obvious, and one more subtle. My little sister came by for a few, and since my husband doesn't like to model for me I immediately took her outside at 2 oclock today. I wanted to one, make myself shoot with a high sun, and two, use flash as I never have. I hate the sun flare in the first one but other than that.... How did it turn out for the first time? One flash, no modifiers, to camera right both times.

Rebecca, nice 1st attempt!
I like the way the sun flares hit the lens on the 1st shot.... the 2nd shot is nice but I don't know if it's me, but it's hard to see where the flash hit or came from.
On the 2nd one, what angle was the flash coming from and settings?

thanks....

Thanks!

On the 2nd shot... Is that not the point sometimes... To not know it was flashed? LOL! Im pretty sure I cropped this one a little, so you might be able to tell better in the SOOC shot. I'll see if I can post it when I get home or tomorrow. Flash was about a 45 degree angle. Sun was overhead and behind her, and she wasn't standing in the shade of the wall. I took a few in the shade without the flash just cause I liked the spot. I'll post one of those too.

not sure if you wanted c&c on just the flash usage, or the pictures in general.

as for flash i think you did great. i agree that sometimes the point is not realize there was a flash...

Here's a similar photo to the second one - but she's placed in the shade a few steps back and no flash was used.

Canon 7D, 24-105 f/4L, 45mm, ISO 200, f/4.0, 1/400 sec

Her face looks brighter to me in the other one...and i can see her eyes better, but that could also be from the head angle?

I am a big fan of using lights outside with the sun. I liked what you did in the first one. And the flare, for me, works here.

The shot you posted with her and no flash seems a bit flat.

I like her pose in the second shot.

Nice Becca! I love #2, beautiful! The bright spot on her chest is a bit distracting but otherwise I love the shot.

I'm about to start exploring OCF too. What are you using for your trigger?
