Future Bat Boy - 03-19-2011, 10:27 AM

Critique: CC:

I am still portfolio building for newborns, so when I learned that an acquaintance of mine from high school was close to delivery, I asked if I could photograph the baby. The really cool thing is she is married to a retired MLB player. :)

We got lots of the classic newborn poses but I thought I'd post a few of the more unique ones. I've cropped or cloned the names off the jersey and the glove so don't pay attention to the sloppy cloning - it won't be there in the final image. :)

1. I would like to improve on this shot. I've had another client who played college baseball and did a similar shot but I'm just not liking how the jersey looks in the background. How would you have arranged it?

2.

3. This one generated lots of great feedback on the mom's facebook page. :) It was dad's idea; I must say it never occured to me that he would be interested in placing his diaperless son in his glove! :)

I look forward to hearing your thoughts - thanks for looking!

Amanda, I agree that the glove shot is strong... nailed it. Concerning how to improve #1, not sure, perhaps the shirt is under him and he's touching the baseball with one of his little hands? The ball may be a better prop than the bat, which is too large for the newborn. But I have no idea how to do newborn photography, so I don't have a lot of experience to draw from. Good job!

Thanks to you all for taking the time to comment. Laura, you crack me up. :)

And thanks Paco for your suggestions on #1. Here is my earlier shot with a different newborn where I used the ball instead. (I think this was one of his dad's little league jerseys, not his college jersey, I think the smaller jersey size actually might look a little better). I found the ball still pretty big for those tiny newborn hands. :) It's also not quite as busy and the jersey is a little straighter, but I'm still not completely happy with it and can't really put my finger on why.

Love the glove shot, I've seen this done a couple times now from different angles and think it's a great idea! i don't even notice the cloning, but the first and glove shot are my favs. :)
