Newborn Session: Beckett - CC Very Much Appreciated - 05-05-2011, 05:54 PM

Critique: CC:

I'm back for more! I went into this session better prepared, and much more comfortable than my previous session. This is also the first official session with my 5dmkII.
I am determined to improve, and would greatly appreciate any feedback, critique, or pointers. I hope that I am headed in the right direction!
Thank you!
Sasha

I like all three. Really like the Coke crate. The skin tone is a little off on the third one.

New 5D and 50mm?

Thank you, Thomas! I noticed that his face was much more yellow than his arms and am working on balancing his tone out. He's pretty yellow throughout so I will work on that in LR before ordering the print for his parents.
Yes, this was my 5d's first dance, and I paired it with my Siggy 50! Love it!

+ 1 what TC said, did you just use available light or lights and did you use a white balance target? I have one that has black, white & gray.

I just saw a Photovision 2011 DVD with Julie Klassmeyer on New Borns and it ROCKED!

nice work!

I used available light but did not use a white balance target. I bought a gray card a while back but I don't use it very much. I guess I just like to torture myself with spending more time in Light Room!

I have the Photovision 2010 DVDs and learned a lot from Beth Jansen's "Window Light Wonders". I still haven't finished the series, though.

Thanks for commenting, Angel! I still have a ways to go!

what a cute little baby :)

1) I like this one, wish he was sleeping, he just has a blank expession/no expression KWIM

2) sweet image but my eye is drawn to the out of focus are, maybe try a diffrent crop?

3) Great pose ( hope this was a composite), he is jaundice looking so maybe the skin tones are off a little and it looks like the focus feel on his little hands instead of the face ( could be upload also) otherwise adorable shot :)

Great job and keep at it :)

Wow! Thank you, Kimberley!
1) This was one of the first shots from the session and his parents loved that his eyes were open and looking to the camera. Still, I wish I had a shot of him sleeping to go with this one!

2) I get what you're saying! I have a shot of this same pose with a much closer crop but they picked this one over the other so I thought posting this one would be best.

3) Yes! this was definitely a composite! I tried to fix the jaundice in my second upload, but perhaps I need to try again? It's a little of the upload, but I noticed that his nose seems to be the point of focus. I wish I could have unwrapped him so that brown wrap wasn't there, but he absolutely HATED being naked, and was happiest when swaddled.

Thank you so much for the feedback, Kimberley! I love your work!

I pretty much agree with what Kim said, I mean, who wouldn't, she is a goddess! I will also add that in the 3rd one, watch your prop layers. Meaning that the white carpet draws attention away from the baby. I try to keep my carpets in the same hue as the backdrop, or other props. Overall, you did a fantastic job, so glad you don't live in Brownwood ;)

Hey Heather!
I never really thought about the different layers being an issue, and liked the difference between the two, but I completely understand what you're saying. I've taken note and will remember that for next time (because now, that white fur is starting to bother me)!
Thank you so much for the feedback AND the fantastic compliment! If I did live in Brownwood, I think we might need to get together for drinks on a regular basis! Or tea. Whichever. And maybe that could spell trouble for Brownwood... ;)
