Strobist attempt - 08-26-2009, 03:25 PM

I was at a BBQ last weekend with a bunch of photographers. :w00t:
We were playing around with some lighting in the capacity of a "Strobist" style.

We tried out the new Mini TT1 and Flex TT5 wireless triggers from Pocket Wizard.
While they do indeed send eTTL signals to and from the flash and camera, we found that we liked the more control that full manual gives us.

That being said, I'm glad I got to play with the triggers before buying them.
I saved myself about $750. :w00t:

Here's a shot that I took with the setup.
580EXII in a Softbox to camera right, set to 1/2 power.
580EXII with a reflector umbrella camera left, set to 1/4 power.
Canon 50D
24-105 f/4 L IS at 58mm
ISO 100
f/5.6
Shutter 1/100

They actually brought in a model, but I prefer the one I brought. ;)
For those of you who don't know her, that's my wife.

Although I must admit, the idea of High Speed Sync off camera is intriguing.
We didn't get that far while playing.

Nice soft lighting. You'll be hauling that umbrella everywhere now! Next time, pick a better background or pull her out from it and use that 2.8 lens thingy you got. ;)

I got a free month of videos over at Kelby Training and most all the pros there are using full manual with off camera flash.

Thanks Roger. But I was a guest at someone's home. I wasn't about to start dragging furniture around. :p

Come to think of it, I don't know why I didn't break out the 50 f/1.4

Oh, and did I mention that I have a softbox too?

Nice photo but wished there was a tad more on the right to even her in the frame.
Since you don't have the full frame goodness (as Abel) I am starting to hate your 24-105L. That thing is sharp.
I could always find a job and get the 5D with the 105 but my pictures will still suck.
