Irony Labs shoot - 06-30-2011, 10:05 AM

Critique: NC:

I was really dreading this shoot since I don't have a clue how to photograph a fitness model nor do I do any off camera lighting. She is Irony Labs athlete of the month. Luckily, there was someone there directing posing. Here is the link to Irony Labs to illustrate why there are drinks in the last shots: ironylabs

Some cool stuff. The one with her mouth wide open like a laugh scares me though.

Thanks! Haha, I could see that! They were trying to get her to laugh, and it wasn't really working since it looked fake. The one toward the end of this shoot was a real laugh I caught.

I was going to say the same thing, but I agree that the second laugh is much better. I was really confused as to why she was drinking because I didn't realize the drinks were part of what they were selling.

I think these turned out really well, although the somewhat more relaxed type photos she looks a little uncomfortable. Don't know if she was or not or if she just has the best posture on the planet.

Yeah, it's for a "healthy" mixer for drinks. They serve them at this bar. I actually had no control over the posing (well, I didn't want to, anyway, since I didn't know what they were wanting). She was actually very relaxed the whole time. She did have to keep stopping during some of the stuff with the weights b/c they get heavy. Thanks!

very sharp shots and great post processing! some of the angles are kind of weird to me, but maybe it's because she's so muscular and just looks different. otherwise, really cool :D

Thanks! Yeah, the other lady wanted me to shoot from some of these angles, but I totally understand what you are saying. I had no clue how to shoot to show off the muscles lol. Definitely an different kind of shoot for me.

I think the indoor gym shots needed a different approach. There's quite a lot of negative space with distracting elements that tend to emphasize the room more than the model.

You could try a "pull out wide, shoot in close" approach. You'll get a bit of distortion, but shot properly, you can emphasize the strength in her arms in some of those lifting shots, or her height and fit body in the platform shots.

The outdoor poses are nice. The wider composition and negative space seem to work here, mostly because of the lack of distracting elements. The vignetting is nice too. Good work on those.

The bar/product shots are well done given the lighting conditions - I'm sure it must have been dim - although the poses the posing coach gave her are pretty awkward. I too didn't understand at first what hanging out in a lounge had to do with fitness. Not your fault, so good job.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Kirk! I actually have tons of closer up ones. I just haven't processed them yet. I really don't want to do anymore of these because it's just not my thing. I knew what I wanted to do if I had had ocf, but since I didn't, I just had to use my 580 on camera and bounce it. Yeah, I thought the posing was awkward, but this was for them, not for me. Luckily, the model loves them. Not sure the company has seen them yet, but it's my brother's company, and I did this for free (well, he paid gas), so he'd better be happy with them. I totally didn't want to do this and told him it was not my thing. He said, "I'm going to launch your sports photography career". To which I replied, "I don't want a sports photography career. I will do this just b/c it's you".

The back arch pose she has going on in shot 2 and some of the others make her look like she has a beergut despite the ripped abs. Seriously.

Oh well, I didn't pose her, so I can't help that at all. I just photographed it.

I wonder if she would want you to do anymore work for her after that statement?

She delivered exactly what a controlling client wanted. Don't see why they wouldn't.

Excuse me??? First of all, that statement was said here, not to her. Second, she thinks she did a good job of posing this girl. Third, it's my brother's company and yes, they did like them and will use me again (not that I want to do it again, I did it as a favor). I shot what the CLIENT wanted. I did not do my own thing, so I can't be faulted for the poses, as I explained above. And yes, the girl loved them, as well (even though they weren't for her, either).

And just a note, I don't mind critiques, when they are based on something I have control over. BUT, if you read above, I did not ask for critiques, anyway. If you want to critique the photography itself, minus the posing, then go for it.

3. Be considerate & professional at all times to other members on the forum.

5. Courteous Criticisms
When critiquing posted photographs, please do it in an adult, considerate and professional manner. Do not insult the photographer or simply state "it sucks" etc. Give a reason as to what you may feel he/she could have done a little differently in order to get better results. Also, feel free to offer some positives about the image itself that you did like, this will inform the photographer what worked well in your opinion. We can all learn a lot from each other here so let's be professional about it. View our Guidelines HERE.
