Cowgirl Studio Photo Session - 07-03-2011, 03:35 PM

Critique: CC:

Pretty simple for this one. White backdrop, 1 200W continuous bulb, and one remotely triggered flash pointed at the ceiling.
Sharpening and color grading in post.
I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks for looking!

Really like #1. #2 I would have liked a little more DOF to get both eyes in focus, but a good shot. #3 I'd be interested to compare to one with more DOF, but I still like it.

Nicely done!

Thanks, ya'll!

After 150 views, I didn't think I was going to get any feedback. I tend to gravitate toward shooting wide open rather than stopping up, yeah. I'll try to remember to get out of my comfort zone next time and get my focal planes a little wider.

one thing i would recommend is posting smaller images... its tough to critique an image when its dimensions are 1024w × 1536h becasue we have to scroll up and down in order to view the entire image.

I'd recommend something like 800 tall tops...

I agree with Keith, I love the shallow depth of field in all the pictures, but just a little bit more on #2 so that her second eye is in focus. Is the catch light in her eye a heart?!

Strangely, #3 is my favorite even though it doesn't show her face at all.

I like the composition on #1, and I think the focus should be on her face and not her hand. I also like #2, and I think you need a deeper depth of field. On #2 it's not clear to me why the tip of her nose and her eye socked seem to be in focus, but her chin is not. Maybe it's the angle you took the shot. I like the lighting.

Nice job with these images. I like the composition and pose on #1 and #3. Also like the color palette on all of them. Her expression in #2, half apprehensive, and a bit unsettling, makes me look at the picture longer. In all of them the narrow depth of field takes away from the image more than it contributes to it, in my personal opinion.

Thanks for sharing!

Yes! I have no idea how that happened. I thought it was pretty rad, though.

The DOF issue seems to be the consensus. That's a tough critique, because I really like that look, personally. But, next time I post, I will make sure I have a deeper focus. Thanks for your help, everyone.

I tend to actually agree with you about the DOF. Just want a tad more on #2, but overall, I like the look of the shallow DOF, and I actually think it adds to the photos. What did she think about them?

She absolutely loved them. She had a bit of a story which may have made her respond more favorably to just about anything though, ha! So I don't know if that's a fair gauge of things.

Without telling the whole story, she was pretty much looking for this portrait session to be a commemoration of a completely new life for her, and she was extremely pleased with the rest of her photos as well.
