Hi guys,

New to this forum. I got a new back drop recently and my ex wife's daughter agreed to help me try it out. I'd love some feedback.

I like the backdrop but I think I would like it better if it was alittle more out of focus and if it was a little darker. Maybe if you pulled the subject a lot farther away from the background it would help both.

Thanks for the feedback.. I purposely wanted a clean crisp background since this is a textured backdrop, but I do need to shoot some with a shorter DOF to see how it looks.

Thanks again,

Clyde

They look on the soft side to my eyes. I'm not a fan of the painted bricks either, a plain solid color would look better and be less distracting. The posing of the first and third images are odd to me (especially the third image with the two missing appendages). All that said I like the second image best, though I'd try to half more whites of the eyes showing.

i like the BG, in fact i would love to see some type of harsh side light to bring out the texture if possible, and not a fan of the bricks

Thanks guys,

Can someone recommend the best resizing for this web site ? These are soft here, but not so much on my PC and I wonder if I need to adjust that.

I did notice that I had "amputated" her hand, but didn't realize a foot as well...I really need to slow down and see the shot before I click the shutter button better.

I gotta find a place for the faux brick floor....It was fairly expensive : ) , may it would look better with a different backdrop ?? hopefully !

Thanks again for the feedback,

Clyde

I wish I could help with the uploading, but I just upload everything to my server with the long side at 800 pixels and save at level 10 quality out of photoshop.

You may want to try using spot focusing, or manual focus on the eye closest to you. This is crucial in portraiture. The skin tone is a tad orange on my mac monitor.

Thanks again for the comments. I do shoot in spot focus. Most of these are spot focused on the face area and I always try to focus on an eye, but I figured anywhere on the face @ f 9 would get the face for sure in focus. The files on my PC are not this soft, even on the lower resolution files. I need to review my resizing methods I'm sure.

Do you guys think the red from the faux brick is contributing to the orange tint on the skin ? She is fairly tanned from the summer sun, but I do see the orange tint you mentioned.

The backdrop as well as the floor are both new and a little tricky to light. The manufacture ( Denny Manufacturing Inc) recommends in the shipment papers not to directly light the backdrops, but only from spill. I was using a 3' x 4' soft box camera right for the main,( about 45 degrees and feathered away from the backdrop) a 46" bounce umbrella for fill on camera axis, with I think a 3:1 ratio, and the hairlight is a 10" softbox overhead and a bit behind and a kicker snooted to the right side of Kamryn's hair / head.

The exposure was measured @ f 9 on my meter. ( @ 200 SS)

Thanks again,

Clyde

good luck with the upload...I quit uploading photos because they always look like crap. I don't have an account with flicker or another place. Occasionally I forget and upload something....then I recall why I quit!!! Thus the reason why I didn't comment on that!!

The problem with the "painted" bricks is the lack of shadows in the grout area. They look flat and painted, it doesnt play well with the eye, well mine at least. I agree about the focus. The background is sharper than the subject regardless of upload issues. Thats the way my eyes see it. I really like that backdrop by the way.
