But wouldn't the white balance work for that? I've found myself having to adjust that when alternating between the shots I take inside, outside and night.

AWB can be all over the place. Some cameras are better than others but mine always seem to struggle with artificial lighting.

Just a few tweaks will help, you already pegged one. i think the main thing is you basically have broad lighting when it should be short lighting or just plane flat lighting-you know typical butterfly light

I personally don't think she looks like wax, there is still plenty of skin texture there

Also curious what lens did you use, and do you have a longer one?

As far as her not liking some, that's par for the course.

And your color's not that bad, at least on my monitor-

no offense to ray, but to me she doesn't look good

I set WB to flash in camera and adjusted WB in post slightly to suit my personal taste.

I shot her at with a 24-105mm. I have a 135, but that would require me to shoot from my bathroom. It's a little impersonal:P

Always trying to grow; I intentionally stretch beyond my comfort level.
I was trying to go for a hopped up version of a typical butterfly setup. I was trying for a 3Dish look. I used 6 lights total for this picture.

Gridded background, small soft box for hair, gridded bd for key, soft box under, two gridded speed lights from behind for rim.

I shoot in raw+jpg. I wanted the rim lights because I was attempting a specific effect. I didn't come anywhere close, but it was certainly a learning experience:P Here's a picture with a more typical lighting setup that I did previously: http://cstewart1977.smugmug.com/phot...Vgj5VLz-XL.jpg

It is cool that you are totally giving things a shot! I never seem to have the time or cooperative subject. haha

Also, I'm trying to force myself to do things "the hard way". I use CS5 and a tablet. No 3rd party plugins or even actions. @Ray, thanks for trying to clean it up for me, but I was going for a different look.

I would love to have just half of the lighting you have. I could do a much better job of screwing things up.

This is a tired, lame, cliched answer.

Very much like my reply. Useless without elaboration.
