First newborn shoot - 10-10-2011, 06:42 PM

Critique: NC:

This couple is really gorgeous, and their baby looks like a living doll so it wasn't too hard to get some good photos. These were all done with window light and a reflector in a very small space.

Ok, I assisted for my first newborn shoot weekend before last, so first of all let me commend your patience!!!! I definitely could not do that for a living (I might have a better chance if someone develops baby duck tape ).

Knowing how hard these are, I think these are fantastic for a first attempt. I tend to prefer the close up shots, and so I'd say #3 is my favorite. Another suggestion for the group shots is to get the baby up closer to head level. The photographer I worked with achieved this by having the father hold the baby with his forearms (with his elbows close together) and then propping the head up closer to his and his wife's faces. I think I like #6 better than #2 for that reason; she's more a part of the picture as opposed to when she's in their lap.

Great suggestions Audrey. The shoot took a lot longer than I expected because being a newborn, she was only happy nursing most of the time! But that's to be expected since she's only a few weeks old and mom could hardly let her out of her arms.

I actually enjoyed the shoot quite a bit. And since I've had four children myself, I totally felt comfortable. I'm hoping to get more newborn shoots.
