Critique: CC:

been doing some rework as an exercise in portfolio building. Here's a couple I've been working on, and more at the link to the gallery. Warning, the gallery itself has images with nudity. Feel free to CC any image including gallery ones. Thanks!

I really don't have any good CC for these because it is really the first time I have seen shots like this. I can give a personal opinion and tell you that I really like them and what I like and don't like about them.
I like the warm colors and the lines that the motion creates.
I don't like the crop of the second image for some reason. It seems to me like it might be more pleasing to my eye if it were a 1x1 crop if possible. I don't know why just makes me wonder.

It is a very cool concept and technique that I would like to know more about. I think I could do some interesting shots of my son hunting with this idea if possible. I am not sure that the lighting of the late evening would work or if I need a darker setting.

Thanks for your comments. Actually to me, emotional reactions to photos are often more valuable than some sort of "trained" critique. I don't think the 2nd image would quite fit in a 1x1 without doing a little extra "set building" in photoshop, but I can see why you might find that an attractive option. I personally am a big fan of 1x1, I wish someone would just make a big ass square sensor DSLR. My least favorite aspect ratio is the 2x3 of 35mm fame.

It would be interesting to try to replicate out of doors. experiment with a slow shutter speed and a flash triggered via "second curtain sync" if your camera has it. You'll need a very low ambient light level to keep the background from burning in too bright, depending on the shutter speed you end up with. These shots were in a studio against dark backdrops, shot with a "hot" continuous light at about 2-3 seconds shutter speed, and then a strobe flash triggered by hand when it seemed appropriate.

I keep going back and forth on the warmth.. they look a bit over warm on screen and orangey but print better.

I was thinking the same thing about the colors, Steve. And for some reason the second image speaks to me more than the first - I think because the first pose is a bit more defined and I can really feel the movement from one pose to the next.

I will have to play with it and see if I can get some good results. When I get a chance to try it I will post.
