Some of you may know fellow member Robert (rab3rd). We got together on Saturday afternoon some fun under the...well...clouds. The sun did peek out every once in a while.

Rob & I put our heads together for a collaborative shoot and quickly learned neither of us knew how to pose dudes. This was a semi-serious moody type of photo shoot and I tried to reflect that in the photos.

You can see more photos on my facebook page.

The last I like.

Is it me or does it seem they are under exposed?

Agreed, under exposed. I like the 3rd one. The second would be better without the hand touching the face IMO.

I'm sorry but I think none of them is a good portrait shot.
First one - posing is unnatural and shooting into the nostrils is never flattering. So if the photographer shoots from below face line the model needs to lower the chin to avoid making the nose too large and too "open".

Second one - underexposed, harsh shadows, "nose problem" as mentioned above.
Looking up into the sky ist most of the time a sign of being unexperienced and not knowing how to pose or what to look at.

Third one - looks half hearted to me. If you were going for a dramatic lighting effect with strong shadows then you need to enhance it more. If you're going for even lighting then you need to add a softener or a second light IMO. The pose is symmetric and hence rather boring.

Sorry, not meant to be hurting.

Rob being introspective, eh.

#1, where was your light? there seems to be a funky double shadow from his right arm.

#2 Rob seems exposed well to me but the background seems way dark. I have had that happen when I get everything set and then clouds roll in and screw up my exposure for the background. I like this pose for Rob.

#3 is a neat location, but I wonder if it would have more "mood" and fit Rob's pose and expression in B&W.

Almost forgot, what modifiers did you use, especially on the first one? Did you shoot manual or TTL, and since it was day, was it HSS?
