Yungay, Peru Disaster - May 31, 1970 - 11-27-2011, 08:47 PM

Critique: CC:

Spent a few weeks in Peru and had a chance to visit Yungay, Peru. This town was buried by an avalanche caused by a quake and buried 25,000 people. They say only 92 people survived this disaster - mostly children that were attending a circus on a high area of town.

The avalanche and mud slide also affected other nearby towns and the more accurate loss of life was estimated to be more than 70,000 people. This avalanche was estimated to move at 218 miles per hour.

Here are three women who survived the disaster.

That last one would make an excellent mono-conversion photo.
The depth of detail in their skin tells a life-story all on its own.

Hi Mario, it was quite eerie walking and riding on top of the town. We covered a lot of the town in a dune buggy. The Cathedral that sat in the center of town was cut in half as the avalanche roared into town. There were four palm trees that survived. Only the tops of the palms could be visible after the disaster. Now 41 years later only one lives, but they still keep the trunks of the others there.
I understand that the 92 survivors (mostly children) were adopted by many around the world. Some of them have returned to visit their home town(s) and see the relatives that are still there.
It is Peru's worse disaster.

Remarkable. Love the B&W conversion too. Very cool that you got their photos, because that is quite a story to go along with it, and the faces with the story makes it much more powrful.

While heading back to the hotel at sunset I came upon this scene.
We had a lot of rain this day but luckily it was clearing in the direction we were headed.
