old style glamour - 11-30-2011, 09:53 PM

Critique: CC:

An attempt to old style Hollywood glamour, without trying to copy Hurrell verbatim. I do have a fresnel adaptor for my flashes, and will be using it next time I shoot in this style - for this image I used a beauty dish. 1/160s f/7.1 ISO200 70-200mm at 200mm on D700.

Thank you Jennifer! This was done on location, actually, but the same principles apply.

Very nice, looks just a touch flat on my monitor though. Excellent concept and execution.

Very nice! It does have that style of the older glamor shots.

Love it ... I like how you got the light on her face just as in the old movies. I remember watching those films in RTF class back in College and always noticing the main characters having that harsh light on their face shot though a cookie cutter slash.

That little bit right there is what gave me that old film photo look.

Overall, it's a strong image. I feel she is piercing through the photo to see us. lol.

Always great work Paco.

I like it, Paco.

One thing I always liked about Hurrell was that he had the subject looking just off camera. Did you take any with her camera unaware?

Thanks, Keith, Ray, Tom. I agree that the spot-like lighting on her face and hair, only partial, helps conjure up those old glamour portraits.

Tom, that's a good point, I did take some with her looking away, but her expression on this one was my favorite. This is the kind of beautiful light and mood that only Hurrell knew how to do:

Several years ago I picked up a book of Hurrell's photos. One thing I noticed in yours that is different. Her hair. In Hurrell's photos the hair is very carefully done and nothing blown around. Of course, they were all in studio under hot lights and you said yours was on location. Another photographer you might consider if you havent seen his stuff is Yousof Karsh. Canadian photographer from 40's and 50's.

Wonderful pic, Paco. I like both the lighting and the processing.

I love Karsh. He didn't really do this style of old glamour for the most part though he did make some beautiful pictures of some beautiful starlets. My favorite pics of his are typically of males though like his pics of Sir Edmund Hillary, Hemingway, Einstein and of course his most famous - a disgruntled Winston Churchill who just has his cigar plucked out of his mouth by Karsh.

Sorry for the tangent.

Agree completely. Karsh didn't do much glamour but he was a great portraitist.

Thanks!

Brad, no worries about the Karsh tangent, it's welcome! Karsh was a master of studio lighting and portraiture!
