Jake and Hannah Family Photo 2nd Try - 12-11-2011, 11:44 PM

Critique: NC:

Over a year ago I shot this couple when I first started out. I mainly shoot four wheeled or four legged and furry subjects and I was a beginner so the pictures were BAD (venture in and cover your eyes if you dare First Shoot)

I've gotten much stronger since then so we gave it another go since their little family has grown and has a little one on the way. One of the many things I would have done differently is stayed in shutter priority or manual since my shutter speed was way too slow at some of the longer focal length shots.

Overall, I like the compositions on these. Some are out of focus, as you mentioned. I think the first one is the best as far as expression goes - the others seem to be a bit stiff/forced. And honestly I couldn't even really tell she was pregnant until I saw the second to last one - i was wondering why she was holding her belly in the second one! (Didn't read your post carefully.) The streak of light across his chest in the first two is distracting (it's less distracting in the second to last one). It also seems like the faces could use some fill. Oh and watch out for the trash in the background on #1 and #2.

Thanks, that's one thing I wish I did more (posing). They initially wanted candid pictures but they weren't very candid and they just came out looking awkward, so I really didn't have them pose at all :-( She is very small, she is due in less then a month I think.

If you could re-shoot on an overcast day with a hint of fill flash I think these would really pop, the light at the end of the road is a distraction and this road runs north and south. If you could find a similar road that runs east and west you could have the sun to your back. or shoot in the middle of the day to reduce the shadows. JMHO.

Otherwise they are very nice.
