Street photography from Texas to Southern California (12 images) - 01-02-2012, 01:29 AM

Critique: NC:

I just got back from a vacation with the family to the West Coast. We drove and took our time to visit places along the way. I took my Fuji x100 with me and did mostly family vacation photos. But I also try to do a bit of my own work, "street" photography with my little camera.

Here are some images. I would be interested in your overall response to the work, and your opinion on images that stand out. Thank you!

1. This was a candid in the old square of Santa Fe.

2. Man lost in thought in La Jolla Cove, CA. I liked how well dressed he was, and his expression. I was 2 ft. from him, but the x100 is stealthy.

3. Artist on the Santa Monica boardwalk - loved how the light fell on the work he was doing at the time.

4. Chinatown in L.A. - we ended up having dinner at this place, and I grabbed this shot before dinner. I liked the three figures looking at the hanging Peking ducks - I also liked her long legs, I must admit.

5. Two lovers in Santa Monica beach, taking refuge in the forest of piers at low tide.

6. Getty Museum in Los Angeles. The contrast of the small girl and the serious "adult" art caught my eye.

7. New York New York Hotel, Las Vegas. I was interested in the contrast between the "adult" photo studio and the two innocent children.

8. La Jolla, CA- young couple - nothing very special here, but the way they were looking at each other caught my eye and I snapped right in front of them.

9. San Diego Museum of Art. I liked the "frame within a frame" provided by the dood, which looks like a painting frame, and the Modigliani painting on the wall. I just waited for someone to stop to look at the painting.

10. Near Sedona, AZ. This group of Korean tourists came to visit this quiet and peaceful place, and they immediately made themselves at home. Instead of getting a bit ticked off at the intrusion, I saw this picture and took it.

11. Mission Beach, San Diego. These folks had Christmas lights on their bike, and I quickly got this shot in near total darkness. Gotta love the x100!

12. Petting zoo, San Diego Zoo. There is something special about sheep, and this one allowed me to capture her personality with this portrait. Not people, but close.

Paco - looks like we took the same trip, about the same time. I only had my big gear (my little camera Oly Pen was delivered to my house while will we were traveling). Great shots, love the story in them, and as always you are a master of light.

I love your images, but I think I almost always do.

Did you shoot these in B&W or are they color and converted?

Steve, Jay, Andy, thanks for taking the time to comment and share your thoughts.

Andy, I shot them in color and then converted them to black and white. But the x100 allows me to shoot raw+jpeg, and I can set the jpeg files to be monochrome with a number of filters on them, so that when I look at the files on the lcd, they are in black and white.
