1st shoot no ambient - 01-03-2012, 03:04 AM

Critique: CC:

I used two 580 I's triggered with an st-e2. With the flashes turned off, no light registered on the sensor. The main light is about 8 feet away in a reflecting umbrella and is at camera right. The secondary light is about 3 feet away to camera left and is bounced off of a white wall. I don't remember the power settings of the lights except that the bounced light is turned way down relative to the main light. In this room I usually use window light as the main light, but on the day this picture was taken the window light was too dim due to over-cast. I think the resulting light is OK, but I'm no lighting expert so I'm asking for input.

There are two crops. Which do you prefer?

Thanks for commenting, James. I worried about the shadow and whether it is too prominent.
I may have lightened it in the bottom image. I did lighten it in one copy of the image but I forget which one it was.

I wasn't expecting to take this shot. I was planning to take a family shot for a Christmas card, but the mom (my daughter) asked me to take one of just the baby. We took a couple of the baby at the fireplace, but they didn't seem right so I had her parents hold the blanket in front of the fireplace to get this shot. I hope the blanket looks like snow. It sort of does to me.

The group shot is posted below. The light seems a little hard, but my daughter likes the shot. She wasn't sure about the baby shot, though it does show her two new teeth, and she liked it for that reason.

Yeah, I know -- random hand on shoulder. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Your Grand-daughter definitely likes the camera. I like her emotion.

I also like the second photo of the baby.

I prefer the first, but not because of the crop. The tones and white balance look more accurate.

I need to check if I warmed the cropped version of the baby shot in photoshop with a warming filter or if that is the one I on which I used flash white balance in DPP. Probably the former.
