Street fashion - 01-15-2012, 11:49 PM

Critique: NC:

Today I spent 2 hours with Dagmar, a lovely European woman doing "street fashion" for fun. All the images are done with flash and available light combined together. The flash was the key light and the ambient served as fill. The flash was an Einstein E640 strobe with either a beauty dish or a 4ft strip box.

(I realized that the copyright text should now say 2012, need to update my Lightroom settings)

Thoughts? Does the series work?

I like them Paco and the series does work well.

The first is my least favorite - not completely sure why. It looks like you removed the light pole from above her but the fire plug and light pole near her legs distracts my view.

I like the shallow DOF in 2 & 3 and your choice of deepen the DOF in the other is spot on.

Fun model too....

Paco, very nice images as usual. Yes, the series works.
4 is my favorite as a fashion image.

Some quick thoughts: #1, lighting on face doesn't work as well as that in 4 or 5. Bag is also quite prominant. Don't like seeing so much of the bottom of it. It appears that you are letting the loose crop on the bottom draw you into the image, but the image stills feels a bit flat (lighting on face too). I wonder if a slightly shallower DOF would help push the building back. #4 is best image IMHO. I like the warmer tones on face. Handbag is still oversized for my tastes. A good series. Interesting compositions.

Very cool photos, Paco.

I have to say that number 3 is my fav. Really like the DOF and lighting. And though you can sorta see the rail in her glasses, it kinda gives them some texture.

Always some wonderful work to view by you.

I haven't done any doctoring on any of these images, they are all straight out of the camera. Good point about the fire hydrant, she was moving fast and I was trying to get a "paparazzi" style grab shot.

Good point about the bag in the first image - it would have worked better for her to carry it on the other hand, as it's pretty big. She had some humongous bags, for sure!

I appreciate all the freedback!

good quality but the poses look to posed. Sometimes I will suggest to models to just do something and catch them in a more candid state the trying to get them to act out what I am looking for.

Paco, have you tried converting these to B&W? Some of the images here would look impressive without the color distraction.

Good idea, Bruce! I'll work on that and post one or two samples!
