3 Newborn Images in B&W - Baby in a Basket - 01-26-2007, 12:32 PM

This is a shot I had of a newborn session recently. The parents requested all B&Ws. Its my 1st time using practical props...like the basket. I havent really gotten into the swing of newborns. I'd so rather shoot toddlers...

Any suggestions?

Edit: These comments were about the first shot. The other two didn't load so quickly so I missed them.

Really beautiful shot.

The diaper kind of distracts me, but that's probably just personal preference. And it may just be my LCD screen, but I can see where you dodged around the flower petals. The only other point I'd make would be that it feels a tad imbalanced. I might have cropped the left in to the edge of the basket, and then take some off top and bottom to the correct aspect ratio. The flowers balance out the right side of the pic, but the left just feels empty to me... Off centering the baby a tad I think adds some interest as well.

But that's just me, take it for what's worth--not a whole heck of a lot, LOL!

It's a great capture of the baby for sure, VERY cute!

Thanks! The flowers were his hospital gift. I used them to slightly balance the larger white blanket over hanging the edge. I didnt dodge around the flowers...There is a slight overlay to brighten them. Maybe thats what you see.

As for the diaper...ugh. I got 3 shots with no diaper from a 3 hour shoot. The parents didnt want to deal with it. I softened the folds and put a shadow on his bottom, but the diaper is still way uggo. Any ideas?

Do you mind if I crop the image to demonstrate what I mean?

Sure, go for it. None of these have been cropped at all yet. Once I know what sizes they want I'll start cropping. Thanks!

You probably would have ended up with the same thing I'm sure.

I agree about the diaper, but you can't strong arm the client to get what you want.

I personally don't like sleeping baby photos. Too much like "dead" baby pix.
