Results from 1st Wedding Shoot... Any advice or suggestions? - 06-27-2005, 07:11 PM

I had the opportunity this past weekend to be 2nd shooter and assist at a wedding. This was a first for me on both counts. I was very nervous about it, and since I don't have all the fancy equipment, or lots of know-how, or any experience, it was really stressful. I tried my best to not appear that way, though. ;)

Anyway, I've gone through the pictures I took and have uploaded the ones I was happiest with. Keep in mind that the edits I made are just for my personal use; the original RAW files will be edited by the primary photographer to meet his specifications and the couple's requests. I would like some opinions and advice on what I've done to help me decide if this is something I should consider doing again, or if this wedding is the only one for me. I do have to say that I can't imagine myself EVER doing this for a living or on my own. LOL

Anyways, advice and critiques are appreciated. I've posted my faves, and the rest can be seen at http://laurielblack.smugmug.com/gallery/616068 Thanks in advance!

2, 5, and 6 are excellent. I like them.

I helped out at one this weekend also and had a good time. Learned some new things, reinforced some of the limitations of my equipment (working with the COE - Chief of Everything - on a solution), and actually got some nice shots. I've only post processed a few, but will post some for critique once I've got them done.

I really like those I mentioned above.

Some great shots here. If this is what you're capable of as a "first-timer" I think you should definitely pursue this type of photography if it's something you enjoy.

I strive to do as well on my first in August.

One thing I did notice about the shots you posted...... none of her face?

LOL It was rather interesting...as beautiful as she is, she's quite camera-shy and told me she didn't like to have people looking at her. I managed a couple of candid snaps of her though. I wasn't in charge of the formals so I only got a few.

Thanks for the replies so far and the encouragement...I feel a little more comfortable saying yes for the next wedding I've been asked to assist with in August. :o)

She is beautiful! And I love the very candid, natural laugh moment of that last one.

The second shot is perfect. I love the older, imperfect hands in contrast with the delicate white lacings... gorgeous. I agree about her laugh in the last shot. Wonderful!

I think you did a great shot. Very nice at capturing all these small fleeting memories that most people don't think to include in a wedding photography session. :)

I can't believe this is your first time. The shots are great. I especially like the kiss, although it looks a little too sepia to me, (but that's probably my uncalibrated monitor). I also LOVE the laugh. Great capture. Keep doing weddings,- I can't wait to see more.

Wow thanks! It really was the first time...I was so nervous I thought I might pass out but now I think that with the results and the encouragement I will do the next one in August and possibly one in September. Someday, when I get more equipment I might have to tackle one on my own. For now I'll be content to assist and let someone else have all the pressure! LOL

I just kind of kept in my mind what I would have loved to have gotten for wedding pictures on MY big day. All the things no one captured, all the moments that no one saw...those are what I wished I could have and so that's what I tried to get for this young woman. As I get more comfortable (i.e. brave) I might be able to even suggest things rather than just capturing what they presented to me.

Thanks again everyone for your comments and your support. I truly appreciate it and feel much better about my results than I did previously. :D
