Nice eye in seeing the photo opportunity here! Actually, I would prefer something about half-way between the two.

I'd vote for something in between, too.

The first one is good, but you can see that it would be even better with more contrast.
In the second, though, I find myself actually distracted by the contrast.

I like the second one better. And I wonder if a non-standard crop would make the picture more appealing? I am not sure, but I tried eliminating some non-essential elements and I like the results. For whatever is worth...
