Thank you, everyone, for stopping by to have a look and commenting. With street photography, it's never the same. I think that is why I really love it. Each situation has to be handled differently. You kind of have to go with your instinct as to what to do. Sometimes it does require that you ask for their permission and ask them to carry on as you take the image. Some people just couldn't care less and let you take as many pictures as you want. Then you have those who will do anything you ask. Some days are good, some are horrible. It's highly likely that the majority of these people are there every day. They remember you. They get used to you. You almost become part of the scene, but you have to be consistent. Carry as little gear with you as possible...that will deter any intimidation. I take only my camera and one lens...nothing more, not even a bag. Last but not least, I will share a little secret with.....if you smoke cigarettes, then great, if not - buy a pack. You'll encounter homeless people and vagrants who want to be paid to have their picture taken. More often than not, they will accept a cigarette or two. Oh....and, yes, it never hurts to spend some time talking to the people. That's all I can think of for now. I went out and shot again today, so keep a lookout for more pics. Thanks again for looking, I REALLY appreciate it.
Andy - no releases required. If they're in a public place, it's game one. You can even publish or sell prints of them without a release. So long as you don't do it for advertisement of a product or the like. Cheers!

If you approach people with that awkward feeling, they'll be able to sense it and in turn, they'll become more apprehensive. Just take a deep breath and go with it. It is so enjoyable and fulfilling.
