This is candid shot of one the Texas Renaissance Festival performers taken last weekend. Post processed with sepia and added a little noise for effect. C&C welcome.

I would be curious to see this photo without the noise. For me the noise comes across as blue, red, and green pixel (on my monitor). It's kind of distracting.

I like this version much better.

On my monitor the hands and legs look a little overexposed, that's the other thing I would change.

(I'm a neophyte on a noncalibrated monitor FWIW).

Color version - 10-06-2005, 09:56 PM

When I took this I was thinking - Rembrandt

and yes I also think the lower portion of photo - hands, legs is a little blown.

Your processed photo looks better than the original. Something about the mixture of colors just made the photo distracting. Good job.

It's always been interesting to me that women in this era showed most of their breasts, but they never showed their ankles or legs.....
come to think of it, breasts are better....

Different Crop - 10-06-2005, 11:12 PM

This is one of those shots that you can spend days trying different processing and cropping.

Dennis, I like the non-noised sepia shot best. Of course if you could have gotten her to jump up and down that could have produced some interesting results...

It's a nice shot. I agree with others that the non-noisy sepia version is best. I sometimes like the "grainy" look for monochrome images, but a B&W (or toned) image shouldn't have chroma noise. I don't know what filter/plugin you used for adding the noise but next time either see if it has an option for "luminance only", or else add the noise before you do the B&W/toning conversion.

Definitely agree with this. It's funny, sometimes color is an important part of the composition, but other times it ends up just being a distraction, and when you take that distraction away the real strenght of the image (whether it's tone/shape/texture/whatever) is revealed.

I think a little more cropping needs to be done!
