Homecoming job - 10-19-2005, 01:17 AM

so im shooting a homecoming ceremony during the halftime (my first paid job, w00tz) and im slacking on lenses BIG TIME! i'll be shooting with a digital rebel and I'm curious as to what the best glass would be for the job..? im trying to get my hands on a 70-200 2.8L for the job, which in my opinion would be ideal.. or should i try to get a 24-70 2.8?

any suggestions would be great, thanks!

Adam

Congratulations.
I guess lens choice depends on what type of photos you plan to take.
If you will be shooting up close, then the short zoom would be good. It sounds like it is inside, so the wider lens will also allow you to shoot at lower shutter speeds.
If you will be farther away, go with the longer zoom. Flash? A whole new set of choices arise. If you get the short zoom, the flash may have lot of fall off or lens blockage. The long zoom would need a powerful flash.

So, in the long run. Use the short zoom, and if you can borrow the long zoom, have it ready.

Depends....are you shooting the whole ceremony baloney or just head shots n stuff? I had to shoot the homecoming court winners at half time at a 2AA school, in addition to the game, last weekend, and I used a 70-200 for the head shots and they rest. Since most of the time they come across the field and get announced, you'll need the reach. Plus it seperates the dressed-up glory of the nominees from the football field environment. But also have a wide angle so you can get full shots of them. Parents go all out and spend insane amounts of money to make their kids look schnazzy, and I've seen moms get pissed cause the photog didn't get their daughter's dress in the shot. Also, since you have the time and oportunity, flash baby. Fill that stuff in. Remember you're color balance and shadows; they can kill. Have fun, you're MAKING MONEY!!

haha, my thoughts exactly..

so basically, a short lens would be ideal and I should use flash as well.. should i use flash or will a 2.8 be fast enough to capture in low lights?

Because of the lack of light I would see about trying to rent an 85mm 1.2L. That should be a good focal length and the extra two and a half stops will make a huge difference. Maybe also use a 50mm 1.5 for a group shot.

That is the reason for local pickup. You can try it out and check condition before payment is made.
