how do you..... - 06-13-2009, 04:41 PM

Ok, I got my first official shoot in a few days. I have several ideas floating around in my head on what I want to do, the shots I want etc etc. I was going to try and sketch them out so I don't forget any but my sketching... well let's just say my sketching leaves a lot to be desired. Any suggestions on what to do to retain all these thoughts/images/ideas floating thru my brain???

find other images that resemble the poses you want and print small thumbnails to keep in one of those pocket sized notebooks?

Im very visual, so even having crappy little stick people would help jog my memory as to what I was thinking. So the details stay in your brain...you use the stick figures to trigger the recall.

PS - Im insane! My other shooters dont think like me at all, and thats what works for me. I think I was wired upside down or something.

I also methodically go through a shoot and have posing notes (no illustrations) on what I wanted to do. Ive been doing this lately a lot on the boudoir stuff.

Ill make a note I wanted 4/4 lentgh, hollywood light, broad lit, legs crossed, off centered & leaning back on hands. And that shot is over here. I ended up changing a couple of things, but it was the general gist of what I was thinking about b4 it was shot.

Next time I do the shoot, I remember that is pose #4, and tweak it from there.

Sometimes, I find poses that I like on websites, then I take a picture of each one. Then during a shoot I can flip through my camera look at the poses and the model just thinks that I am checking the photo I just took.

I've occasionally put representative images into an "Inspiration" folder on my iPhone. With the original artist's permission, of course.

If you will allow me a little moment of counter-intuitiveness:
Quote:
Ok, I got my first official shoot in a few days. I have several ideas floating around in my head on what I want to do, the shots I want etc etc.
Keep in mind some sage advice from another discipline that might apply here, too:
Quote:
“Approach the game with no preset agendas and you'll probably come away surprised at your overall efforts.”
-- Phil Jackson (who, by the way, just coached his way to his 10th NBA title).

Having said that, suspect that Coach Jackson does actually draft something of a game plan, and his players have practiced and practiced and practiced for LOTS of possible scenarios that might arise in the game, and I'd bet that if you broke into his desk in his office, you'd find his sketches for pretty much all those ideas.

I keep a USB jump drive with me that has some files I may need on the spur of the moment. One of the folders is labelled "Envy Photos." As I'm cruising around (especially TPF), I will save images I find particularly compelling, and when time and opportunity arise, I use the "Envy" images to inspire my own efforts.

I keep a list of "Ideas" folders on my iPhone for different shoots, i.e. weddings, e-sessions, seniors, etc.

There's also this thing called "The Lookbook" that looks great. I was thinking of getting one or two. Not a bad price and you have a wealth of poses at your side. You can even show the clients what you have in mind with it.
