Ok, I've tried fireworks photography and most of the pics turn out like crap. I'm going to shoot the fireworks after the Ranger game this year. I've got a better camera this year (40D), a rock solid tripod(Induro) and a remote release cable. Any suggestions on where I should start with apeture, ISO and shutter speed? I'll probably be pretty far away from the stadium and shooting with a 70-200 f/2.8L.
Also does anyone know if they will let you on the parking lot of the new Cowboys stadium? Thought that might be a good place to shoot from.

Just a thought: Try to get the ballpark in the composition as well for added interest. Personally, I find pictures of just fireworks to be a bit boring. It's possible I'll be out there as well.

John,
I am hoping I can get somewhere behind the small lake on the north side of the stadium and try to get the reflections in the water. I may try it from the northwest corner and look towards the home plate entrance to the stadium. I'm only about 4 miles from the stadium. I guess I should go scout the locations like a real photog would do.

Here is a good resource. The trick seems to be adjusting your aperture and ISO (but I would start with a lower ISO and play with the aperture first, as Ken suggests)...good luck, let us know how they turn out.

This will be my 3rd attempt for fireworks... the last few have been abysmal.... at best... so I'm really looking forward to it. Although, with the Burn Ban in force... I'm not sure how that's gonna work out. You know?

Here is a whole bunch from last year. Check out the exif data for settings on your camera. And Here are some I got from a tall building downtown Fort Worth last year. As I recall most of mine were ISO 100 and various lengths of exposure on bulb using one of those triggers you have. This forum is full of great fireworks photos. Type in fireworks in the search and all kinds of threads come up.

Chris,
I would start with the aperture your lens likes best (maybe around f8), a shutter speed of 4 to 6 seconds, and whatever ISO needed to get the exposure.
I think the key to shooting fireworks is longer exposures.

You want to keep your ISO low, because noise is cumulative over a long exposure. You aren't trying to expose the scene, but rather catch the trails of the pyrotechnics as they fall.

How about if you don't have a triopod and you want to add people to the picture. Is that possible. Should I use flash??

You guys aren't as on the ball as we are around here...
My husband asked me, what time are the fireworks... I told him... 9pm... this was around 8:30 or so tonight.
So he says, guess we'd better get ready and go... so I grabbed my stuff, and we took off to Katy Mills.
We got there, and it was really empty... I was suprised at the lower turn out...
We found a parking spot... one of HUNDREDS available... and I grabbed my tripod... and my camera bag... and we hiked out into the grassy/undeveloped area and found a spot... we could see where they were going to be shooting the fireworks from.
So... we were out there about 10 minutes or so, and my husband walks over to ask them what time they are going to start...
The response: About 9:00 or so....
on July 4th.
Seriously... we were so cracking up. We are usually running late to most things....and in this case... we were WAY to freaking early... lol...
We'll be late tomorrow night I'm sure... lol.
Night all!

tripod, why not go pick one up at walmart. we have two, one expensive one that could be a boat anchor and a cheap walmart version. the walmart version gets used the most. people may make fun of it, but when we have it and they don't, there are often requests to use it. the best tripod is one that gets used.
you will need increadibly fast glass or high iso for people and fireworks, imo. one thing you could try is setting your flash to go off at the end of the exposure (on canon it's the button with high sync that has 3 triangles pointing to the right, the last one filled). just try to have the people not move. it all depends on other sources of ambient light and you will have to play with your aperture and iso to get the exposure correct. and most likely only one will be in focus bc of the low f/. but, at the end of the day, it might work, but your focus will most likely be on one or the other and/or you will have grainy pics. worth a try though.
