Advice on what to take to Uganda - 07-13-2009, 12:57 PM

Going to Uganda in two weeks for a mission trip and will be taking lots of pics of kids in huts, orphanages and other places. Also taking an extra week and doing a gorilla trek and some fishing for Nile Perch.

What I have is the following:
-Canon 50d and 20d bodies
-100-400 f4.5
-24-105 f4.0
-100 f2.8 macro
-50 mm f1.8
-580 ex speedlight

I take a lot of pics of animals in Africa but have never done so in a rainforest environment. I believe I'll be able to get within 30 yards of the gorillas and maybe closer. I'm thinking I'll have the 100-400 on the 50D and the 24-105 on the 20D. Since lighting could be an issue I'll probably set the ISO to about 800 and drop it to 400 if lighting is better.

Any suggestions?
Thanks
David

lots of batteries and lots of flash cards and a method of making back ups. power converter. lens wipes ( Sam's Club has Zeiss lens wipes at the optical dept. that are good).
probably old hat to you, but once you leave the comforts of home you never know what to expect.

I might be worried about moisture. Having two bodies is a good ideas as I wouldn't likely change lenses in a very moist environment with a DSLR.

Of your gear, I'd leave the 580EX and the 100/2.8 at home. The 50/1.8 is must if you want to take some shots at a lower ISO under the rainforest canopy.

I saw a guy with an Epson P-5000 storage/viewer that seemed pretty neat if you have the money.

Good points. I'm taking my small laptop so that I can store images on it.

I don't want to lug around a big tripod either. Any suggestions on smaller (lighter) tripods that might work? I will be offered a porter to carry my gear while on the trek so I'm not too worried with weight while trekking. All other times I will be carrying my own gear.
Many thanks.
