Well, I'm the odd man out, but I try to get them to stick with classic looks so their picture won't be so outdated so fast. How many times do you look back at high school pictures and your clothes and say "What was I thinking?" Something like denim and white or black or khaki's never go out of style . . . . the portrait will still look great 10 years later, no matter how their living room decor or taste in clothing may change.

stay away from pastels.
might want to hit some blues, reds, and yellows.

punchy colors nothing muted like kakis or browns or olive greens.
I agree with Donna that you should stick with classics. Not only to ensure a viewable portrait all year long, for many years, but also to keep the focus where it needs to be...on the subject and not their clothing. I also agree with Ciarrai in that when given the right outfits, it is amazing how well they can flow together without having to be exactly alike. Just usually hard to find clients who can pull that off. My last engagement session they didn't wear the same thing but I loved the combination.

An old film scan where they had the same exact sweater, just different colors. Sorry about the small size - all I have on me at the moment..

anytime Mark. I know Donna does a lot more families than I do, I'm sure she has better examples of the different clothing.

I think it's telling that neither Daniel nor Holly made any comment about your statement.

I think that's sweet.

I'm a bright colors guy. Try red, blue and yellow. If you do any black and whites, then try dark and light colored clothing to give it more contrast.
