Lighting Question - 10-24-2005, 11:23 PM

This photo
http://www.pbase.com/slowpokebill/image/44867354&exif=N
was taken with a 20D, with flash. What makes it look so "dark"? Why does the flash not blow it plum out of the picture? Is it because he was at 180mm?

Is there any way to do this without the long lens? Say, at a couple of feet? (This would be with either a Rebel GII or PowerShot Pro1.)

Looks to me like it was done with fill flash.. the camera automatically turns the intensity down a bit...

Try this to see what I'm talking about.. find a flower or other subject like this in the shade.

Set your camera to Av mode at about f/8.0 and put the flash up... take a note of what shutter speed the meter is going to use when you shoot and take the picture.

Now leave the flash up, but switch to M mode and set f/8.0 and whatever shutter the meter told you before.. fire another shot.

Compare the two shots... the camera used fill mode on the flash while you were in Av mode and shot it at full intensity on M

Thanks, Brad. ...and Steve.

I'll keep that in mind and try it when I get the chance.

it's not on camera flash. The flash is above and to the left and pointed down at the blossom, which is why there are shadows from the pink part on the leaves directly below it. It's a great shot.

I hadn't thought of that, David. I thought it was a good shot, too. Wish it was mine.
