Infrared Help - 07-27-2009, 03:51 PM

I recently attempted to try infrared photography. I purchased a 950Nm filter, but all my shots are coming out a deep red color. I was trying to duplicate the images I always see where the foliage is white. I noticed there was a 720nm and a 850nm filter also, would that help my pics achieve the look I want. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am afraid all your images will be red, because of the filter. Some people convert them to B&W, some play with them to get color back into them. Of course you could shoot IR film :-)

To better answer your question, see http://www.wrotniak.net/photo/infrared/ and scroll down. This will show you how to maintain some color information in your IR images (although it is fake color, but it still looks cool).

Ir film would not help but a Leica M8 would...

IR photography with an M8..

Most infrared shots have been post-processed quite a bit. I remember being confused as well when I first tried shooting infrared. I haven't played with it in a while, but here's an example of a shot straight out of the camera and then post-processed, some people also like to switch the red and blue color channels in PhotoShop to get the look they want.

Actually, it would help. Color IR film has three IR sensitive layers that give a unique look to the photos, in full color without a bunch of fake processing. You can still get it from Europe in 120 size rolls. The film is Kodak Aerochrome which is supposedly the same emulsion as their old EIR except it seems to be 400 ISO instead of the 200 ISO used in the old 35mm (discontinued) version.
