Halp! Color balance underwater - 08-02-2009, 04:51 PM

My kids are taking my wife and me to Hawaii for our 40th anniversary.

My problem: I got outvoted, and am going on one of the submarine cruises, or whatever they call 'em..to view the undersea wonders. Now: Apparently, it's a real sub, and we will be submerged to a depth of 100 feet ( I hope to hell it ain't 100 meters! )

To me, that is like flying in a helicopter. If there's any possible way to avoid it...

Knowing that colors in the red spectrum are absorbed by the water, and everything looks blue-greeny, what filter and/or white balance setting do I use get fairly realistic colors? The Nikon tech was no help. She suggested a polarizing filter. HUH? Somehow, that just doesn't seem right. School me, please!

I was thinking fluorescent setting, because fluor. lights are mostly greenish, but then I thought, shade and /or overcast will warm up the balance, soooo...maybe that would help. Then I got to thinking my 81A warming filter might do the job.

HELP!

That old black Nikon has me in its spell;
That old black Nikon that shoots so well...

I used to do a lot of diving but was not a U/W photographer. I do know that you need a red filter (basically adding back the red that's being lost). However that was with film - with digital you might be able to add the red back in PP.

I would think that a visit to a dive shop will get you the answer from someone with a little more recent knowledge.

If it's 100 meters depth they will be using lights and that will mean balancing for whatever lights they have.

I doubt there will be any lights, you will have clear visiblity for 120 ft. Light will not be a problem for visibility but you will loose reds. You can get a filter that will balance that out or just do it in post or ask them to float a gray card off the stern and custom white balance! Seriously just shoot in raw and fix in post.

You might try a piece of 18% gaff tape on one of the tanks and then get a reading off of your buddy... and shoot raw, and then match that in post?
